Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
Finally, I got it to work. I noticed that there is an Asus driver installed in my system (in the Add/remove programs) which I have no clue where it came from. Uninstalling it got both Doom3 demo and Prey to work. So basically it was a driver issue. To everybody else, just make sure you remove any unnecessary drivers, and install only the needed ones.

The game is awesome, btw.

Thumbs down Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
I just wanted to register my disappointment with the demo not working. I tried everything under the sun and still get lock ups, memory errors and failure to load errors. This reminds me of computer games and demos of five or more years ago when you had to be somewhat of a computer expert to get them to run right.

I am running a freshing loaded copy of XP, 2 gigs of RAM, and a 3200 AMD processor with all the latest drivers and can't for the life of me play for more than two minutes. I was all set to buy this game, but playing the demo has steered me away. Sorry -the concept and graphics look great, but it has to run more than just a few minutes! All my other high end games run smoothly so you can't tell me it is my system.

Ok then, try these:

* Uninstall Prey, redownload from a differrent mirror
* Scan for spyware/viruses/trojans/etc
* Check for any program thats using up alot of memory

Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
Finally i got it to work!!!

I've used the Xp utility to restore an older System Configuration at 09 April 2006. At this time i was able to play with Quake 4.

It worked fine. The Nvidia graphic driver version at 09 April 2006 was 84.25. I dont' know if it is a driver problem but from 09 April something wrong is happened with my OpenGl.

Now i think that all the problems here are in some ways linked with PC problems not with the game itself.

Thanks very much!

Nobody thinks it's their system until they figure out why it is. It doesn't matter how bad ass your system is - if an old driver or setting is choking it, all bets are off. Excellent info, by the way, about the Extension Limit setting. I don't think I speak alone when I say that I don't pay attention to most of those settings, or know what advantage they might have. It's uber-frustrating though, especially when you've been waiting for a long time. Half Life 2 took most of a day to install, because the Steam servers were choked and it wouldn't let you opt out of installing Counter Strike. With a 5-CD install, it was time consuming to try different things to see if they worked.

Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
As suspected, reformatting works. It's not the drivers, since I am still using the same 91.31 WHQL drivers (didn't even redownloaded - was the same setup file on my other HD).

Something went awry "behind the scene" (background processes or apps, maybe) between the day I was playing and the day after that.

Weird because even then, it was a fresh install of Windows (only 3 days old). Today, it is only hours old (just finished this morning, and I had to try out Prey before I went to work).

I'll install my usual apps one at a time and run Prey inbetweeen to see if any of them killed my OpenGL. I'll report back with the results.

Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
I have the same problem. Yesterday the game run flawless at a resolution of 1280x1024, everything at highest settings.
Today i booted the pc, and the game does not work anymore.

System:
amd 3800x2
a8n-e
2 gig
xfx 7900 gt

i tried updating drivers, downgrading drivers. Installed doom, this game also does not work:

...calling LoadLibrary( 'opengl32' ): succeeded
Couldn't find proc address for: wglBindTexImageARB
Couldn't find proc address for: wglReleaseTexImageARB
Couldn't find proc address for: wglSetPbufferAttribARB

exactly the same as by Prey.
Hopefully the bug will be resolved quickly...

Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
well, i someone said something about uninstalling unneccesary drivers. So i rememberd that i have an "unkown usb" device. So i unplugged the 2 usb cables and the game does start again.

After that i plugged the cables in again (and the unknown message came back) and the game (and doom) runs fine.

Also after a reboot (with the cables plugged in) it still runs.

Conclusion. This bug has nothing to do with opengl?

If it happens again i wil notify you people.

But i reccommend everybody to try to run the game with usb hubs/things disconnected...

Re: ERROR: The current video card / driver combination does not support the necessary fea
Bugger...i turned the pc on today again. Now the games don't run anymore. Tried the usb trick, tried the mouse/keyboard without the KVM switch. It refuses to run.

I don't know it anymore. Seems a very strange bug in the Doom engine (because Dooms suffers the same)
Hope it will be solved because it's very frustrating...

[update]
hmmm...i now have updated my daemon tools (version number still te same)
and now it seems to work. Also after a reboot.
But i'm not surprised if it does not run tomorrow...

I use an NVIDIA Geforce 7800 and recently installed the 91.31 drivers. I don't have Quake 4 or Doom 3 installed anymore so Prey demo was my only OpenGL game.
You may have noticed in your NVIDIA control panel under the section where all the quality/performance settings are, and only if you have the option checked; "show advanced features", is the variable "Extension limit" which can be set to 'on' or 'off'. Not knowing what this was at the time, I like many others, may set this to 'on', cos having things 'on' just seems to be better :P
Long story short. Turn it 'off' and all OpenGL games will work again.
Wanna know why? When it is 'on', it cuts short the string that describes all the extensions to OpenGL 1.1 that the driver/hardware supports, so the game thinks it doesn't have anything useful and bails. If NVIDIA had a profile set up for 'prey.exe' one of the application specific settings would most likely set "Extension limit" to 'off', saving you any hassle! Also, since this setting has been around for years, downgrading drivers won't change it, because it existed in earlier versions!

In summary: Turn (and double check!) "EXTENSION LIMIT" to 'OFF' and prey.exe might start working again. Let us know how this works for you!

*edit* Would any ATi users be able to tell us if a similar option exists in Catalyst drivers? As this may also explain ATi users having the same problem.

this worked for me! thanks a ton! *goes off to play full game*

For those of you running ASUS motherboards...I've got an A8N SLI Deluxe and had their "special" video enhancement drivers loaded as well as the ones for my e-Geforce 7600 GS from the NVidia website. I had all the problems listed in the previous posts until I did a clean delete of all the drivers to include the ASUS video drivers. I reinstalled the latest NVidia drivers ONLY, and after that...no problems at all. Won't help everyone, but for those with this type of system setup, here is my working solution. This probably applies to any other type of "helper" video programs/drivers that you may have loaded.

well, games are running better here now with the newer version of Deamon tools installed. But sometimes i still get the error, but a reboot or some tweaking and the game runs again. Strange stuff.

I want to ask people with the problem of they have vnc (video driver) installed?
