Help please: game too sluggish to play

The game is so sluggish it's as if Tommy's drunk. It's impossible to play.

Here are my specs:
Windows XP
Intel Pentium 4 dual processor which runs at 3.2 GHz;
512 MB RAM
GeForce FX 5200 video card with 128 MG RAM.

I turned all the game options to low, defragged the hard drive and it didn't help.

Any help would be most appreciated.

So short of getting a new video card there's nothing I can do? The sad thing is I paid $49.99 for the game at Best Buy and BB won't let you return games.

Turn every video setting down. You can also try setting r_render nv20 and image_usenormalcompression 1. That will use the geforce3 render path.

For that good CPU you should have a better card you will only be happy.

I have the same card and the r_render setting works great ! Now I can play on medium details. Thanks

That video card was sold in the 90's. Definetly upgrade to a new card.

Where do I change the render path? Do I change it in the game, in options or in the console? Or do I change it out of the game in the Windows display settings?

My husband figured it out! Went to the config files and made the changes. But thanks so much for the help. This is the most helpful board I've come across--really great for somebody like me who knows nothing about computers but loves first-person shooters.
