I would love a turnaround key in DNF.
Who thinks a turnaround key is good? Who would like to see it in DNF? Are there any current FPS games with a turnaround key? I have read the faq, and am not asking for a feature to be added - I'd just like to know if I'm the only gamer that loved the duke3d turnaround key. When 3dr released duke3d, a turnaround key (meaning at the click of a button the player automatically turned 180 degrees) existed in game. It worked well, though slowly. It was a great idea then. I believe it was the only fps game at the time to have a turnaround key. Later with the release of shadow warrior the turnaround key got an upgrade! It worked very quickly and smoothly. I was in love. That key saved my wrists from carpel tunnel and allowed me to play many fast paced games with ease! The turnaround key was one of the best ideas 3dr came up with. The highly competitive elite used the turnaround key often. I've always wondered why today the turnaround key is nowhere to be found in fps games! Anyone else feel the same way? |

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
No One Lives Forever and its sequel have a turn around key. Though I've never seen the use of it if you use a mouse (usually you put the sensitivity high enough that turning around isn't hard to do).

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
I sure do.
I'm a keyboard-only player, whenever it's even somewhat practical. Embarrassed to say that ALL that time playing on TEN, I *never knew* about that key... ![]() ![]() It works most excellently for a Brave Sir Robin shotty offense. |

I am a mouser. I used the turnaround key in shadow warrior almost as much as I used the fire key. I cannot overemphasize it's usefulness to hardcore gamers. I won a shadow warrior tournament on TEN using the turnaround key when TEN was popular. The turnaround key was extensively used. To this day I have yet to find shadow warrior player who can beat me. The turnaround key increased the funfactor of the game. Also it increased my efficiency because I spent less time manually pulling 180 degree turns when at the push of the middle mouse button it was automatically executed. This gave me more time to focus on the main tasks: gather weaponry; seek enemy; destroy opponent. Please bring it back in DNF! ![]()

Never used it either. And when I did it was by accident and quite annoying. Especially when getting shot at. And I'm a keyboard-only player for Duke3D Vanilla.

Not really needed anymore with the mouse IMO. Still, it might be a nice gimmick and easy to make I guess.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
To make a perfekt 180 turn takes effort from even a skilled player, effort that can otehrwise be used on other things.
So yeah, a turnaround key is still usefull to some extent, only not as much.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
If I can map a keyboard shortcut to a pre-recorded mouse move (say, turn L 180 degrees) I'm set. Softwares, anyone?
Also, it makes more of a difference in MP imo |

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
If the game supports aliases, you can always make one of your own.
I don't know about UT but all Quake/HL games support that.

I've never used it, and honestly I have to agree that good mouse sensitivity makes it kind of pointless...

Auto-aim doesn't matter to me, I've used it and had it actually interfere in a game or 2!

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
Thanks, Daedolon. I personally don't use mouse whenever possible so 180deg turn would be great even if implemented externally to the game itself. So I guess it isn't entirely pointless to have this capability implemented in some fashion.
I'll look for an aliasing feature in the release, and see if I can find a kbd or mouse driver of some sort that supports my needs. |

For me, a turnaround key is useless, since you can do the same thing with the mouse with a bit of practice. I remember the first time I foudn out about the turn around key... I think it was while playing "Heretic". A friend was chasing another friend around a custom level I built, and he kept getting shot even though the other guy was running away from him. The other guy would turn and shoot him, while runnign past him, then turn around again and do the same thing over and over until the first guy was dead. |

Useless for the easy setup of mouse and keyboard, but if you use keyboard only then it could prove useful.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
Yeah, decent mouse sensitivity and all it takes is a flick of the wrist to do a 180 spin.
I never used the turnaround key, even when I was a keyboard only player. Last game I did that with though was Quake, and even then I quickly changed to mouse/keyboard. Thanks (strangely enough) to going back and playing Magic Carpet a bit... |

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
hmmm...forgive me for being a dumass, but what ís the turnaround key in duke? i never even knew there was one...
but i have to say, even with mouse gaming a turnaround key or mouse button could come in very usefull. MP is all about being just that tiny little fraction of a second faster than your enemy. turning with the mouse takes time. a key of button is an instand turn. could be usefull enough to put it in |

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
I think the actual key (default) is Backspace...
Or was that ROTT, which I think also have a turnaround key... or maybe it's the same key in both games? It's really time to start playing these games again, it's been too long ago... although I won't be using this key myself.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
Accually its not pointless , most good gamers have their mouse sensitivity low for more accurate aiming , ive used it in a script like rocket jump before, its all up to the gamer. what works for some doesnt work for others

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
Quote:
I'm talking about different mice having different sensitivities out of the box, some having buttons to change sensitivity on the fly (Which do people use on default? Do they actually switch a lot?), the ability for drivers to either use the OS sensitivity as a starting point, or to reset it while in a game. In other words, sensitivity X means different amounts of movement/rotation for different people moving their mice the same distance.

i never used it, the mouse system seems to work well enough imo, but i honestly couldn't see the harm in adding the function to the game anyway.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
A very low sensitivity (and therefore slow turning speed) would be just stupid in Duke. He'll be moving faster than all these realistic games, yet turns as fast as a man holding a large jelly on a plate?
I don't know how to compare my sensitivity settings to anyone else's, but my sensitivity is such that I can do a 180 by flicking my mouse about 4 cm sideways. And I'm still pretty good at aiming. Might as well add a turnaround key. The game will be just as good without it, and it'll let whoever bothers with such old control styles to use it. It's not like a run function where it plays a big part in the game.

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
The basic idea behind them makes sense, though I almost wonder if it doesn't even go far enough. Instead of a key that makes you immediately spin around, what if holding the key down drastically increased mouse sensitivity? You could have instant access to either precision or knee-jerk movement whenever you want.

Has this been done before in any game? Sometimes this might really come in handy: one key pressed to drastically speed up one to do the opposite. Cool idea. |

Re: Turnaround key in DNF?
Good idea, but I don't see it being used much, what with the mouse being the preferred choice for most people.
