Question "Black spot" graphics and abysmal framerate -- what's going on?
My problem is that the game barely ever rises above 3 frames per second, and there are a whole bunch of "black spots" on the screen that don't help matters much. I had this exact same problem with Quake 4, but everything else (F.E.A.R., TimeShift, Warpath, etc.) runs as smooth as silk. So it must be something that my video card doesn't like about the Doom 3 engine. What's wrong?

This is your problem. The ATI Radeon Xpress 200 is an integrated video chipset that is not compatible with the game. It will be necessary to upgrade to a graphics card that contains a chipset listed in the supported chipsets section of the Demo readme and on the retail box (upon release).

ADDED: Supported video chipsets as per the Prey ReadMe file that shipped with the demo:

1.3 SUPPORTED VIDEO CARDS:

ATI Radeon 9600 series

This system is nearly identical with my own, and I had the same problem until I updated the ATI drivers with the new Catalyst 6.6. You would "think" that this card would run Prey just fine since Doom 3 really doesn't give the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 any problems (besides slow-down) but....

I can play this demo now, but the last time it ran, it crashed during the cut-scene taking you through the ship. Oh well

Integrated motherboard chipset Graphics arnt meant for use with gaming as there just not powerfull enough and are cheap to intigrate, thats why there on the motherboard cus there cheap and nasty. You wouldent try to take part in a formula 1 race in a ford escort now would you.
