Yay!

I already have both in their original retail cases so I'm not going to buy it again just to have it on Steam though.

I keep playing Max Payne 2 demo it is great, the dead man walking is very tough. I cannot find the full retail version in any shops I might buy online, but not through steam. You would have to pay extra for the goodies folder.

I just found out about this (on Shacknews). Posted a story about it on the front page of the 3DR site.

http://www.3drealms.com/news/2008/01...s_steamed.html

The Payne bundle isn't $17.95. It's $14.95 (although this week it's $13.95).

I have a question though. Why are both Max Payne titles listed under Rockstar? Remedy did the first game with 3DRealms producing.

Rockstar wasn't brought into the series until Max Payne 2... just seems... odd.

Rockstar was the distributor all along if I remember right. They're a subsidiary of Take 2. Remedy created it, 3DR produced it, Rockstar/Take 2 was the publisher/distributor. Pretty simple.

Inbetween Max 1 & 2, T2 bought the franchise, and then hired 3DR & Remedy back to do the same thing they did for Max 1.

Besides, even if my memory is faulty on Rockstar and Max 1, it doesn't matter. They BOUGHT THE FRANCHISE. That means it's theirs to control.

Gee, ain't it great? Looks like all the Rockstar titles are being blocked here in Australia. The only thing we can do is download the Max Payne trailer, woo freaking HOO! This is almost as great as the whole COD4 for $US85 thing. How I just love Steam!

Just to elaborate on the prices differences people are seeing, Steam uses regional pricing so that publishers can tune their prices for the different countries, there's a lot of titles with regional pricing, Max Payne included, so if you remove "&cc=US" from the urls in the news-entry it will automatically redirect international users to their appropiate price listing.

You might also note that prices/availability may vary based on location.

Valve doesn't determine the prices, the publisher does that, Valve also just provides a platform for regional pricing, it's up to the publisher whether or not they want to use it.

So in the end you decide if you want to pay extra for the regional pricing, and if not, you just don't buy it

I was looking forward to buying CoD 4 on Steam as well, but i decided against it when i saw the price was around 85-90$ (Including VAT), and i didn't buy the retail version either for the same reason.

You should take this with a grain of salt, but rumors have it that european retailers actually threatened some publishers to remove their games from the shelves because buying it online was as cheap, if not cheaper than buying them in the stores.

Thanks. I knew Take2 bought the franchise... I just didn't remember Rockstar being involved in the first game at all.

As a MP modder, I'd like to know this too. Can anyone confirm this yet? (ideally for both games)

I also heard that the mp1 Max-Fx modding tools aren't included either.

I've got a package set up including the original Max-Fx tools as included on the disc; the legal disclaimer (scroll down) included with all offical mod files; plus the original mod tutorials/articles in a help file. The file is 12MB and no problem to upload to Max Payne modding sites like Levels4Yyou or Moddb; but the question is, who do I need to contact at T2/Rockstar Games to get permission upload it? Since they released the MP2 modding tools, I'm assuming there isn't a problem, but I'd rather be on the safe side when it comes to this sort of thing (since it technically falls into the dicy realm of abandonware).

Anyone got any good ideas (besides 'just upload it already')?

Re: Max Paynes available thru Steam
Could anyone please explain to a newbie what this 'Steam' is? I am trying to obtain Max Payne 1 for my PC but have failed to find a new, sealed game. I think I can buy this from 'Steam' but am puzzled at having to download the 'Steam' software first. Does this mean that the Max Payne they are selling is not in a box, but is a download? Are their games tied to the internet or free to play on ones own? A lot of questions but if anyone could please enlighten me I would be grateful. Many thanks. Walt.

Yeah, Steam is a content delivery service, which basically you means you buy games from them, which get added to your account. Whenever you log onto your account, regardless of which PC you use, you can download and play those games, as long as you are on your account.

It's good, but some people prefer to have hard copy's of games. If you can't find Max Payne in stores, then Steam is a good alternative. As long as you have a decent internet connection and don't mind waiting for the game to download.

Here's an example, from my account.

I can simply select a game I own from the "Not Installed" list, and it will download to the PC i'm using.

Re: Max Paynes available thru Steam
Thanks for the info Zom-Be. It sounds an interesting business. Does the game you buy stay on your computer so that you can make 'saves' from time to time and run it at will at various times throughout the day, or, does it have to be downloaded every time you play it.

I ask because I have a Dell Optiplex GX 260, which although it play's the demo I have very effectively, is not a very fast machine when it comes to downloads. I would be spending most of the day waiting for the game to download and that would be very little fun. Thanks for coming in though and hopefully you can fill me in a bit more on what is involved here. In passing, I would have hoped that I could have used a cheat to get unlimited ammo, would this be possible with 'steam'? Thanks again for being so kind. Regards Walt.

As Kristian said, once the game downloads for the first time... it stays installed on your system until you remove it.

And even after you've removed it, it stays registered to your account.

Yeah, that had crossed my mind earlier, I didn't think I was clear enough about that.

The game you download stays on that system, but only the correct account can play it. Say if, my friend came round and logged onto Steam, and downloaded Max Payne, which he bought on Steam. Then I logged onto my account, I wouldn't be able to play it, since I don't own the game on Steam, but it would still be on the machine.

Yeah, but then you can't even play the game unless you log into the stupid Valve server. Much better to buy a real boxed copy of the game. Then you can play whenever you want, even if your net connection is down or the Valve server is down, you don't need permission from Valve to play the game with a boxed copy.

Offline mode.

I keep Steam offline most of the time and can play all my Steam titles whenever I want.

Damien_Azreal: I just tried playing Half Life II with my internet connection turned off and with Steam running in "offline" mode. When I tried to start the game, a message came up saying something like "This operation cannot be completed while in offline mode.". So it wouldn't let me play regular Half-Life II, which, of course, has a single-player game with an elaborate story and so on, without having to log into the Valve server over the internet.

So it's just like I said, buy the real boxed copy of Max Payne or Max Payne II if you want to be able to play any time you want, even if your internet connection is out or the Valve server isn't working, without having to log into the Valve server and get permission from them to play the game you own.

Works fine over here. Sure you have it completely downloaded? Try running it first whilst online, then quit and put steam to offline mode again and do a retry.

I turn my PC on with the modem off, it asks to either retry the connection or keep Steam offline. I select offline and go. No problems.

I've never had any problems with offline mode.

Re: Max Paynes available thru Steam
I just tried it again and it didn't work. Here's what I did. My PC was already on, I then turned off my internet connection with my firewall (this stops all net traffic, nothing goes in or out of the PC, this is the same as your ISP internet connection being down due to a storm, maintenance work, etc.).

Then I started Steam, it tried it's standard automatic update check routine, but then couldn't access the internet, after a few seconds a box came up that said did I want to retry the net connection or start in offline mode. I picked start in offline mode, Steam then started up and I saw the list of games. I double clicked Half-Life II to start it and a message came that said "This operation cannot be completed while in offline mode." I tried to start Episode 1 (the first expansion pack for Half-Life II) and it said the same thing.

Remember, the point is to not have any net access by Steam and still be able to play the games, so starting Steam with your net connection on and then turning the net connection off to play games in offline mode (if that would even work) defeats the whole purpose. And all my games were fully updated since I just played yesterday, besides, how would Steam even know there was a new patch out if it can't connect to the internet to find out? Try what I did above and see if it works.

I just looked and I do not have that box checked. So that's not the reason Steam won't allow Half-Life II to be played without Steam being able to access the internet. If you want to get Max Payne, buy the real boxed version of Max Payne, and then Steam is a non-issue.
