New SP map by Piterplus EZ (jr) - "A.dream"
Description:
Game story take place in Duke's dream (while he fell asleep after some solid dose of boose, or maybe after saving the world one more time ).
In his dream his shuttle was rammed by enemie's helicopter. Duke managed to jump safely on the ground and found himself on the streets of the unknown city....

Instalation: unpack files from archive into Duke3D game directory and run A.dream.bat.
Make sure you have eDuke32.exe and do not have user.con in main game folder.
Using latest Hi-res pack is advised.

@ Nightfright I have modified 927 Traffic signal model and skin from HRP. It is compatible with old sprite now (previously it has wrongly scaled, turned in wrong direction and misplaced in x and y axis)

A very nice map. Thanks for taking the time to make the map. The special effects were a fun surprise.

With the new EDuke32 snapshot the map has some sound problems. I didn't hear many of those voices what I heard with the earlier one (which was sadly a bit buggy sounded, thanks to the stupid vista), for example the sound in the supermarket next to those mystic holes. Also I heard "Game over" many times, while IMHO it was a replacement sound.

What to do?

I'm afraid that it is eDuke32's problem , at least currently. All those new sounds are just usial .wav files renamed to .voc and should be played without problem. Same sounds defined in a.dream.def for OpenAL compatibility.

VOC sounds should be defined in the USER.CON, not A.dream.def.
What's the "gmeovr5.voc" file?

gameovr5.voc originally was "Game over" duketalk after the Stadium, the additional one is a strange sound says "over here" or something like this. But this is one of the big number of malfunctioning sounds. Basically 2/3 of the extra sounds are missing or screwed.

Probably a wrong or incompatible code in the .def file or in user.con is the problem, I don't know. It's soo bad, since the openAL snapshot of EDuke doesn't run well, it produces strange sound effects in my stupid Vista. The new one is great, but with this problem.

The "USER.CON" uses "GMEOVR05.VOC". (normal sound file)
The "A.dream.def" uses "GMEOVR5.VOC". (strange sound file)

These are different files(pay attention to the "0"). Only OpenAL snapshot uses the "A.dream.def" file and tries to play that strange sound file. I don't know how this "GMEOVR5.VOC" was supposed to sound. I think Piterplus know that.

OK, I have heard all the .voc files for their own, and noticed which ones work with all EDuke versions and which ones only with the openAL snapshot. I renamed gmeovr5.voc to gmeovr05.voc in both the .def and the .zip file.

The ones work with all versions:

termin01.voc
poolbal1.voc
octarm.voc
octarg.voc
octaat1.voc
octaat2.voc
nobody01.voc
myself3a.voc
hlidle03.voc
chew05.voc
booby04.voc

The rest of the stuff can be heard with openAL snapshot ONLY (12 .voc files)

ahmuch03.voc isn't working at all. I can't hear it with Windows MP.

Hopeful it helped a bit.

Renaming .wav files to .voc is a really good way to confuse the original sound code. I would suggest not doing that.

Played it today, it was enjoyable. Took me an hour to finish
The thing that bothered me were the new octabrain sounds - didn't like them at all.

Again it depends on which EDuke snapshot you use. The one which doesn't play the majority of the new sounds, these Octabrain stuff is out of place. If you can hear all of them, it feels miles better.

The sounds work fine on mine because I dont use Vista and dont have that sound issue and I still think the Octabrains sound is wrong... White noise just doesnt suit.

Yes white noise. If you dont know what that is, it is another name for horible static. And I know thats what its ment to sound like because I have Cool Edit and opened the modified sound files.

The octabrain attack sounds are indeed white noises. Other than that it's just a great fit to the bizarre theme.

We have changed Octa attack sounds to more "easy to listen" versions.
In attach is archive with new sounds, just replace them in "A.dream.zip".
Also, "A.dream_install.zip" on my lycos site is updated.

That is correct, I'm not an author at all.
It's my son's work, even more - I do not play user maps (usially), so all the bug report and wishes (for example that okta's attack sound) I receive only from all of you .
I have listened okta's sound and don't liked it too (as many of you said), so I modified it in audio editor. Hope its better now.

edit. Sorry, I forget to attach new sounds last time.

For some reason, whenever I go into the bank, and turn the corner into the booths, the game crashes. I've no clue if its a vista bug or a duke bug, but I've never encountered anything like this before.

Anyone experienced anything like this?

Side Note: Map is AWESOME (Everything up to the bank that is)
