Well...

They used Sam's face and kept it the same way like that, like a texture. It was lame, his expression was the same.

In the second MP, they atleast sorta modeled the face. I like it better that way.

While Timothy made for a more plausible-looking Max, you can't beat Sam's delightfully wicked little Smirk. I missed that in the second game.

He just came across with more of an attitude and didn't look like a stereotypical cop. Gibbs was good, don't get me wrong, but to me Sam will always be Max Payne.

Definitely Sam Lake, he has just the right attitude about him for Max.

Although, Gibbs wasn't bad at all. But there is no substitute for the original.

Better? Well there was a sort of evolved look in Max Payne 2 so grahically it was better.

I can't say I have a preference....maybe thats because I played 1 and then 2 right after.

Sam Lake is Max Payne. Period. Why on earth they went from a 20-something badass to a geezer is beyond me, however I dealt with it because the Max Payne series kicks ass (at least the ones dev'd by Remedy.. I'm sceptical about MP3 being made by another dev).

Timothy Gibbs is definately better than Sam Lake. Gibbs just had a more grown up cop-like look to him. He looked better suited for his job. Lake looked too much like a teenager.

I thought Sam Lakes looked more sleazy than a teenager. You honestly wouldn't think of him as a cop at all. The stereotypical square jawed look of Gibbs just didn't suit Max Payne in my opinion. When I first saw Max Payne, I thought he was played by Eric Close.

I agree with what seems to be the majority vote.

You just can't beat first impressions.
Sam was perfect!

Sure, the graphics and look "improved" for the 2nd game.
But Classic, is still Classic.

And the original Max Payne I ever saw & experienced, will always have that impact on me.

Plus, Sam Lake himself, is just so Awesome, talented,
and yeah, he can be pretty cute.
But I mostly love that "sexy brain" of his. *LoL*

Besides, I feel that Sam has the best hold on who Max Payne really is.

Meh, the context in which Max Payne is placed is different in both games, and the faces fit in well. I can't imagine Max Payne 2 with Sam's face, just like I can't imagine Max Payne 1 with Tim's face.

I liked the people in the original Max Payne better. One of the things that made it so great was that the characters were created using everyday people, so they looked more believable than professional actors.

Sam, as others have said he is Max Payne, everytime i see a picture i think "Christ... that's Payne in real life!" I probably wouldn't think the same if i met Tim.

Sam Lake all the way. Max in the first game just seemed much cooler to play as. I'm not sure why, but you could tell there was an agenda, an attitude that was behind everything he did.
Tim was also very good in the sequal, but I didn't feel that he had the same anger or attitude. True he wasn't trying to avenge the death of his family any more... but he didn't feel as badass.

I like both, but Sam is Max Payne.

Did anyone else notice that in some of the Graphic Novel scenes in the first Max Payne... Max sortof looks like Johnny Knoxville?
