Not in 1997. 18 months was plenty to write an engine and develop a game around it back then. 3DR were aiming to finish the game in about a year back then, which would've been about right.

computers are going to have the potential to make video games like simulated environments one day. They are going to be able to put so much memory into things, it won't even be funny. Just wish 3d realms was still around at that time to have a part in how that works.

take two is one day going to hate itself for sueing the company instead of keeping them afloat. How much money did they make already from 3d realms? Computers are the final frontier man, how could you just 'let someone go' like that. Alright, peace

I hate to say, but this is a pretty honest review:

http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/4087.html

I can't understand why everyone couldn't settle for releasing a demo level that you pay for, one that is completely finished which they say they have quite a few of

you pay $2.50 for the demo on ps or xbox live, everyone pays for it, take two gives them just one million more to do this and then they get serious, come up with a release date within 13 months, and they hire an outside studio to finish this up already, preferably one with unreal experience.

now everyone is screwed

and the sad thing is, as close as 3d realms was to being done, their release date was supposed to be april 1'st 2010, and they said they wanted to make it that date as a joke so everyone would think it's a hoax. Did they even take this seriously? I mean to be so cocky about it?

so no offense to 3d realms it's just i'd expect more from them. and take two, forget it, they are corporate scum, people that make a profit, take 99% for themselves, give nothing back to the business, and run the economy into the ground.

but here is hoping for something better

yeah dnf really is the equivalent of an oil spill in terms of the millions of dollars destroyed.\

why give money to needy children when you can create an elaborate hoax?

I am sorry but I just do not buy the "It's was almost complete" turd people keep throwing around. Do you honestly think for one moment that a publisher would of not of given them a little more money if it was so close to completion? It's obvious that Take 2 didn't like what they saw and opted out while also wanting what they gave them back then and the time they wasted with them.

I think it was quite close to completion. Maybe not ALL the content that was planned, but most of it. It also depends on how you define "almost complete". The gameplay videos deliver a decent idea of the quality. So my guess would be, that there were still a few major bugs in the game that needed fixing. A further guess is, that due to DNFs history T2 did not like the situation. If it were any other game, they most likely would not have had a problem with it. But DNF had been at a "close to completion" point already - we know the story

but really, how could it NOT be almost complete, there is a whole boss fight in the trailer, cycloid emporer in the stadium. and the battle looks even better than it does on d3d. That is one level COMPLETELY DONE

It's all a conspiracy! 9/11 all over again!

I agree take2 has more cushion for the pushin' money wise.

3DRealms can't even afford to make DNF. Couldn't they just sell the IP to valve? And convergently make the game?

I really don't see why they don't release a playable DEMO, 2 levels

internet, xbox live, whatever. They could easily charge $2.95 for the demo, and make quite a bit of money to get back on their feet. It almost seems like the only viable option at this point.

and they did have like a few levels entirely finished, didn't they say?

the problem with this is, 3d realms has a habit of making this game, and then at 98% done starting over again from scratch. Chances are they were finally keeping this thing.

I almost wish we could get a copy of each version of duke nukem forever. But from a publisher point of view, who is to say they wouldn't just finish 98% of it again, and then nuke the whole thing. This thing is really a masterpiece though, I can't wait to see it if it does come out. What game has more of a legacy?

exept of course splinter cell, conviction is it? which one have ubisoft montreal worked on for like 6 years now? Of course ubisoft was working on far cry 2, so that took some time out. And for good reason

Always bet on Duke!
I'm among the fans who have waited Forever(tm) for this game to come out.

It would be nice if this came out with friendly drm, just before Crysis2 comes out with their "always connected" drm.

It will come out eventually, even if we have to stage a takeover a la FEAR...

Well they better post something new before 2012, I've heard the world will end in 2012. Wouldn't that be really depressing though, they finally finished the game on December 19 2012 and the world ends the next day.
