Time for a real screenshot this time



With the help of Quakis I finally tackled uvw mapping in 3dmax, giving me +10 exp and the new custom model skill. Because of this I'm now a level 10 paladin so I can release a screenshot! Check out the pipes! My pipes.

Thanks I was secretly hoping for more people to share in my newly found modelling enthousiasm, as my map is littered in self-made models now. The lightsprites have been replaced with lightmodels, the wires have been replaced with models, and I'm throwing wooden board models around like no tomorrow in ut2k4's dm_Rankin fashion. Great fun, but nobody gets a shot of that

Very promising. , but try to add some more variety in the color. I'm not sure if Green and Brown mix to well. Add a little bit more to that part, it seems slightly lacking.

Green and brown mix perfectly; the first thing I did when making this map was get the color scheme and theme right - so that's not going to change.

Really? That's the thing I'm focussing on the most; the dark lines on the sides of floors and such run through the entire map. The green bricks are ment to counter the brown (which is basicly the map's skeleton) but I thought they were already bright enough to make a nice whole. And, ofcourse - I'm still hoping for dynamic light in the future which will certainly add a few extra strong highlights.

Well, I find that green and brown compliment each other rather than contrast each other, especially when similar shades have been used such as in that map. What I really meant, though, is that you need more variation in the lighting in the scene. Instead of dark areas and light areas, there's just kind of a muddy middle-of-the-road shading on the rooms. For instance, look at the lobby in the theatre in E1L1 with the light turned on. The middle area will be bright, as you'd expect, but there are some harsh shadows in the corner and whatnot that add to the atmosphere.

I know exactly what you mean, that's the kind of shading I love in Duke3d (and I used it alot in fbsp003) but I wanted to give it a softer feeling in this map. Still using the same technique, just not as much - and mostly in trimming and not as much in actual shadows (which I'm not using yet because it'd be a waste of sectors with this kind of detail). I'm gonna go look into it though, but right now I have no idea to get the same effect in this map (as I'm using soft lightsprites, soft shadowsprites (check the two green walls in the background) and kindof soft textures) as I don't want it to look like a typical dukenukem map with hi-res textures.

I use the same technique for faking dynamic lighting. Will you apply lens flares?

You mean by placing lightspheres in the sky, like they did in that shadow warrior map at the airport? Then no; but if real lights ever get crammed into jfduke/eduke with the option of using réal lensflares then I'll be sure to toss them in

The only beef I have with the picture is the armor, Its just a lether jacket, and the lighting on it is bad, its destracting from the feeling of the TC

Question though, are you going to make just one version or is there plans to make a version just for plain Duke and the other to be used with the HRP?

If you're asking if it will be compatible with classic mode then I'm afraid not; it would be too much of a hassle to get it working on both modes.

Yeah, but its just a leather jacket, I have the same exact one as in the picture, and I don't think it would stop a bullet. It keeps me and is a huge babe magnet but it won't stop a bullet... I mean if its been proven fine by me... for now It's just a leather jacket.
