If I recall correctly they don't have access to the Meqon source code so they couldn't update it. They just got the library. They were supposedly working closely together with Meqon to update the engine where needed before meqon was discontinued though.

Couldn't they overwrite some of Meqon's functions though if need be? Also maybe as a solution to the acquisition they got source code access.

Edit:

I don't think George would have said that the acquisition shouldn't provide a problem if they where forced to "upgrade" to Physx in order to receive upgrades.

Edit2:

Back in the day they didn't get access to the Build source code but I believe they added some functionality of their own via "overwriting" functions.

Edit3:

I am also pretty sure Monolith did the same with Blood.

Overwriting functions wouldn't exactly be a simple thing to do since you don't have access to the internal structure of things (ie you would have to reverse engineer stuff). To some extent you could do your own things but it's probably fairly limited without a lot of work. Also depends on how high level the API is of course. That they did get some or all of the source code sounds like a more plausible solution. Unless George was only thinking of licensing issues and the physics did all they wanted already.

Wouldn't that depends also on the documentation they got from Meqon?

Well, I must say that the physics shown in the Jace Hall footage didn,t blew me away, I found them rather unrealistic and cheap... Certainly compared to the physics of Half life 2 and crysis...

I hope the polishing will help...

The explosion effects were over the top too, and not as cool as the above named games, But they have time to make adjustments, they know what a good game is...

Only cool things that stood out to me in that video, physics wise were the one room getting blow up (with pipes falling and piggy gibs) and the weird red bubbles.

Other than that the video quality was pretty bad and there wasn't much shown where I could really get a good look at anything to make up my mind about how the physics are (or anything else for that matter).

Sadly people assume what was shown was everything the game has to offer.

George has said countless times he wants to give almost nothing away. He wants people to be surprised. Gameplay and Story wise and whatever else. Sure we'll get a look, but enough to want us to buy it and not spoil the game.

I really don't think that was the point of that video.
