Using sounds from DN3D
Just wondering if using some sounds from the duke3d.grp in other places, like movies or music would be copyright infringement? (considering the game is from 1997).

Re: Using sounds from DN3D
If it's something like a voice clip, yes. If it's a general sound effect, then they probably wouldn't be from Duke 3D in the first place. The source is actually a licensed soundbank that 3D Realms bought.

Re: Using sounds from DN3D
It doesn't matter when the game is from. It's still infringement. Whether the sounds are royalty free or not is the question. My guess is I doubt it. If it's for personal use and not commercial it usually doesn't matter, though.

Re: Using sounds from DN3D
I think these sounds are kind of like the FX from Doom. They have been sampled in so many places that it doesnt matter anymore.

Well it's like the chainsaw guy sound from Quake I is like the same sound as the Pig Cop "announcement" squeal... still, I would think you'd avoid commercial use.

Re: Using sounds from DN3D
A Duke Nukem sound may very well pop up in a movie or commercial, most of them are royalty-free sound effects from the Sound Ideas library. Some other sounds are taken from movies like the T-Rex sounds from Jurassic Park - it's legal to steal sounds from movies as long as there is no music or talk.
The Doom sounds are also from the Sound Ideas library, I've made a hi-res sound pack for Doom: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-gen...-now-released/
