How about just FEAR then?

Portals used as weapons and not just environment tricks would have more of an appeal to gamers.

Well, we will get a movie for sure, and maybe even a demo.

Well, FEAR has a really good name that had a lot of appeal. Other then that I don't think it will have much more appeal then Prey.

The name? That's where the appeal of FEAR lay? Prey is a much better name, and it's not some inane abbreviation. I thought you'd say the graphics were better or something.

hehe. I can understand that. But personally I don't think the graphics are that much more appealing (if any) then those of prey.

But you have got to admit that FEAR stands for something, it is something that everyone know and has some experience with to some degree. And that is the appeal of the name I think.

The name Prey also has a lot of appeal I agree. But the appeal of a name is personal I think.

That is true. I was looking for factors that appeal commonly to all gamers. Like bullet-time, viewable player body with melee fighting, intense firefights, etc. Doesn't bullet-time have a more mainstream appeal than mind-bending portal weirdness?

Welcome Zizz, hope you enjoy your stay. Personaly I think we will see a gold annoucement between now and 2-3 weeks after E3.

I am not really looking forward to the level editor so much as I am looking forward to seeing an SDK with some code. I don't think I am really able to be a level designer, but we will see. Perhaps if I am lucky I will be able to makr that one first room.

The press is definately positive, but most previews are. Prey will need some really positive reviews to hope for commercial success. Also, I don't think word-of-mouth is a real factor yet, your ethusiasm aside. Prey will need some really positive "This is awesome" and not "This will be awesome" word-of-mouth to hope for commercial success.

My post was about the timing of Prey's gold announcement, and I still believe that there will be bigger games and bigger announcements at e3 than Prey can compete with. In this way, it would be a huge mistake to waste a gold announcement at e3, unless it comes with something tangible like a demo.

That's the question. Of the two, Q4 and FEAR, I could most easily compare Prey to F.E.A.R. Since F.E.A.R. was a first-run concept it had to drive its way into our heads based on the FPS "twists" it would supposedly bring to the table. Sounds a lot like Prey, yes?

I fully expect Prey to do a lot better than F.E.A.R. though, for more than a few reasons.

Of course word-of-mouth is a factor, even before a games release. It's just one more way to get people pumped. My "enthusiasm aside?" How is THAT supposed to work. From all indications, Prey is going to be a fine FPS, with a rich story line to back up the action. It's okay to feel this way, isn't it?

Stranger and stranger. What happens at E3 isn't going to make or break anything for me. I'm a PC gamer, not a game groupie. We're all different here, remember?

Now speaking about Prey, the game will simply be announced gold when they have done tweaking/optimizing and sorting out dirty bugs .

And we all know 3drealms and how they strive for perfection by releasing top-notch free of bugs games.

So my guess will be after E3 ( When GB gives them the green and gold light).

Or maybe before, in short, they will announce it when it is done, no sooner and no later.

F.E.A.R. has its moments for sure, especially if you have the right rig for it. I'm more than pleased that I bought it. But I expect a lot more from Prey than portals, though they DO sound deeply cool.

A portal gun that permeates gameplay like the gravity gun does for HL2 would really rule. I had made some suggestions earlier on this, involving rerouted hazards, etc.. Don't think it's possible for Prey right now but I'd like to see it in an expansion pack.

Portal gun! *drool* TBH, though, I think I can go the rest of my online life without being hit by another toilet. Which, I guess is why I'd rather beat myself to death then play any more HL2 DM.

Just kidding man.

As for the topic, it will be gold when it is gold and it will not be announced any sooner or later then that.

However, they might give a release date by then though.

Generally, yes. In the instance of Prey, I haven't seen a very broad groundroots upswell of anticipation, yet.

If a gold announcement is worth something in terms of hype, then I wouldn't want Prey's announcement smothered by the weight of the hypefest known as e3. I think that would be a possibility.

Unless you're a demographer how would you know for sure? My gamer friends are stoked about it. The couple of times I've brought it up in forums where people didn't seem to be aware of it, there was a positive response. Beyond that, things will unfold as they should.

My goal is to enjoy a rich, well-polished and immersive FPS. It's up to Prey's marketing techs to fret about the rest.

The only announcement I care about is the one that tells me when to be at EB to pick it up. My rig hungers for Prey!
