Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Most? So far you're the only one, man. Maybe you should try on new glasses or something - I never had difficulties anywhere in WGCity.
But you know, I think you'd really enjoy Billy Boy's maps. edit: Quakis - next he's gonna tell us having a yellow keycard reader at a bar "doesn't make sense"

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Yes, I am guessing the same. There are some alien buttons in that room and you have to press them in a certain combination, and then the door opens to let you out. It's a very simple combination (I think there are only three buttons). The room is an alien trap where you got ambushed, so it makes perfect sense.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Too bad that alien buttons (that are seperated) never have to be pushed in combonation to open anything. That is usually reserved for the regular buttons that we see 3, 4, or even 5 in a row of. Now if the alien buttons were next to each other...well ok. Face it, it's a bad puzzle. Most players would have to visit a forum to figure it out.
So let's say I rate this map a high score, and new players read my score and jump on WGCity. They get stuck in that room, they get frustrated, and there goes my reputation as a reviewer. I think it should be fixed so the big door opens as long as you push the alien buttons in ANY combonation. I am asking the author to fix the problem so I may continue to play and then review his map. Either that, or include a "readme" at the beggining of the game that warns that "alien buttons may have to be pushed in a certain combonation". Either way, I would be fine with.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Okay - Let's ask any Duker if they were frustrated playing through WGCity. I'm sure you'll find a very small percentage (probably like 1 or 2 users).

But the problem is, you're the only one so far who has complained about it.

Of course, knowing the engine would clear it up even more.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
You're in fantasy land again. A competent reviewer, if he didn't like the puzzle, would dock the map a few percentage points, make a small note of it in his review, and move on (but not before kicking himself for being unable to figure out the puzzle). And by the way, even if the map were altered, you would have to start over from the beginning to see the difference, because the saved game includes the map in the state at the time of save.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
It's funny, I was getting bored with this thread so I went to the Steam forums to see how BL did as a critic over there. The first thing that comes to mind is that someone is definitely is a legend in his own mind. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

That just urged me to check out his posts on the Steam forums as well I'm not seeing the hordes of people anxiously waiting for your reviews on there...

I think the problem is here that you're just not very good at the game.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Oh man, thats funny. I dunno, thats prob my fave puzzle out of all the puzzles I have made. Was proud of that.
The best thing about this is you were in there for over an hour and you didn't even try a combination. Priceless.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Yeah this guy needs to play that one map I remember on AMC a long time ago, where it was just a room with a nuke button. I believe it was called Awesome.map.
Map is definitely for him. And if its too easy, maybe BobSP. But I dont think he'd be able to figure out that you can pick up that computer chip. |

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Ok.
Now finding the blue card is a problem, I am quite lost on this map. let me say this...restricting a player with hard puzzles is bottlenecking and it will cause many players to simply give up. That's not really something you want for new players is it? To make it difficult so they leave and try another map? I thought the idea was to keep a players interest up. IMO, these type of puzzles defeat that purpose. You'll always have a core group who played 93 maps and understand that anything is possible and will know where to look. But most players will just get lost. Trust me on that. I can see that here, I am not listened to. My opinion is not valued, all of the maps I have played are somehow perfect and nobody needs to learn to build a better map...everything is already perfect. Any issues with a map that I bring up must just be ridiculous rantings. Congratulations...DN3D features modders who have to date made over 3,000 perfect maps. |

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Actually most people here think 5000 levels are just a piece of bull crap. And very few stand out. Coincidentally the levels you're trying out. So I'd say you will only be dissapointed from now on.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
No one says that Dn3d has 3000 perfect maps. YOU ASKED for the best, and You got it, To quote KISS. If you want crap, we can send you crap.
You dont understand basic gameplay elements, and instead prefer to be spoonfed. Youre the typical "Give me pretty graphics, and dont make me think" gamer. |

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Blue Lightning, by reading you posts, your aren't looking for a map with "3D Realms" quality, you're looking for a map that has no challenge whatsoever.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
Oh no. I could care less about perfect graphics or being "spoonfed". In fact I generally prefer running Duke in it's original 8 bit mode latley, I appreciate the old look. Although what I don't like about 8 bit is the fact when you look up or down the sectors appear to "bend" because proper vertical distance paramiters did not exist. But hell, I can even get used to that. And besides, these maps have very few bugs running them in 32 bit polymost.
What I care about is how a level is laid out. I am passonate about only a few games. These games include Duke 3D and Half Life 2 and BioShock...well, I won't list all of my favorites, but for the few games I keep on my C drive, I really love them and want to see more of them in the form of SP maps. I am not seeing anything that resemles what 3DR did in the level design reallly. Not to say they are bad, some of these maps I have played are very clever. I guess what I am saying is I'm looking for that "3DR formula" which I haven't really found yet (except the short but sweet ym500g). So I was thinking mabey I could make a map soon and show what I mean. I would like to make a good map for other of my favorite games, but odds are not good. BioShock is out, because 2K won't even release an SDK. Half Life 2...well, you have to be a damn genius to use the hammer editor. But with Build, I feel like even a dummy like me might be able to learn to build a map. But no matter how this thread may be scorned or laughed at, I'll tell you that I personally have learned a lot from this so far. A lot about mapping from some of the posters here, and also a lot about myself and my idea of a great map. Some of my ideas have changed thanks to this thread. For example when I began I thought I was looking for a completley non-linear map. Some maps including WGCity taught me otherwise. Don't get me wrong, WG has an ingenius author and a level layout that wowed me and is complex...but too complex. I discovered by going back to levels from LA Meltdown and Shrapnel City (with monsters turned off and in godmode so I could observe the level design), that 3D Realms really made the maps semi-nonlinear meaning there were sometimes two or more paths to get from one point to another, but only at CERTAIN POINTS in the map. That is to say, even if you took a different route like a ledge or went underwater, you ended up in the same place, so you are always being guided in the SAME DIRECTION. Sometimes it is a "circle map" in which case there are two directions that end up in the same place anyway, but either way, it is this SIMPLE design that makes the DN3D forumla so fun to me. I cannot get lost and can enjoy the scenery and battles as I go! That's 3DR's secret! Keep it simple and mostley linear (with a few extra paths here and there making in semi non-linear), but also at the same time make it feel open. This is something that few other game makers have achieved. A non-linear experience like WG city may be fun for some, but not what I am looking for. I will admit that WG City is a great map design..the most complex I have ever seen. I don't know if anyone else has learned anything from this thread, but I know I have, and it is appreciated.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
What do you mean? I appreciate the other posters on this thread, even the critical ones.
EDIT: There are exceptions in DN3D where the level design get's complex and you can wander off in the wrong direction, like in Toxic Dump. But even there, if you go the wrong way, you end up with another way out in the form of a secret level.

Re: Does a high quality SP mod/map pack exist?
I seriously don't understand why you want everyone to have your tastes. Man, that's how humanity is, no one is alike. Please understand this, not everyone is going to like the same maps you like.
I'm feeling pity for you actually, it's really sad to see a person who doesn't have a really open stance for everything, you can only enjoy a few things and that's somehow...miserable. |
