Any special features in the DNF engine
I'm just wondering if there is anything in 3drealms modified unreal 2 engine that wouldn't be possible if they had just moved to the unreal 3.0 engine instead of rewriting most of the code in the unreal 2 engine.

Well Bioshock 1 and 2 both had great graphics with both using modified Unreal Engine 2.

Actually, I think they ended up switching to UE3 completely.

I really wonder just what would happen should an engine switch (whether UE3 or otherwise) occur? Of course, that's assuming when (or if) the game gets released one of these days (years?).

Re: Any special features in the DNF engine
ok so I guess Bioshock used the Unreal engine 2.5 (their modifications) still looked great

Bioshock 2 used Unreal 2 initially but ported to unreal and it only took them roughly 3 years instead of 13.

What engine is BioShock using?

BioShock is using the Unreal engine which has been massively modified by Irrational.

Originally BioShock was being built on an Irrational-modified version of the Unreal 2 Engine known as Vengeance. Since then it has been ported to Unreal 3.0 and has once again been heavily modified.

The game will feature some DirectX10 content for Vista users.

The game also utilises Havok Physics.

Bioshock ended up using the UE3 engine instead.

Since DNF's renderer relied heavily on dynamic lighting I doubt that. UE3 had a really crap lighting model until around DNF development ceased. I don't really see what they would have gained from moving on to UE 3. They would have had to convert a bunch of stuff and port quiet a bit of code just to end up pretty much where they already was with the only gain being some neat new tools.

There is a verry special faature in the DNF engine called :

AutoEngineSwapper.

At the end of each year it will swap to a better/newer engine so the geme
never gets outdated.
It will be great.

Would've been better if that hadn't been the first feature the implemented.

DNF was actually completed in one week. But George decided the world wasn't ready for it. So he put it in cryostasis. When he thinks the world is ready, then he'll thaw it out and say "It's Done."

But... the cryo chamber failed during the extraction process, and all the data was damaged by frost burn.

So now they're working on DN4E: Take 2.

BioShock 2 looks graphically the same to me as BioShock 1 but I guess you can't really tell the graphics improvement if nearly the entire game takes place in tight corridors and small spaces.
