Alien Carnage Released as Freeware
I just released Alien Carnage as freeware. Posted a big story about it on the main page of the 3DR site. Go check it out there.

http://www.3drealms.com/news/2007/05..._freeware.html

I would like to take this opportunity to tell people that the results of the poll I recently took had no bearing on this. The decision to release this was already made when I posted that. But it was nice to see folks agree with the decision that was already made.

John Passfield has updated his blog with a mention of the release. In there is what appears to be sketch art for Halloween Harry.

A really nice game, and quite original for being a sidescroller. Was a bitch getting it to work on modern computers though, if I remember correctly. Luckily DOSBox has come quite a way since then.

Very nice of you guys

I wonder, is the freeware version enhanced one bit from the retail box version? I've been wanting to play this childhood memory many times but I just can't get it to run. I've tried at least four different DOS computers but it didn't work for one of them, I even tried applying TPLfix to get rid of the pascal error but nothing worked.

Ah, good news. I loved it way back then, it was one of the first Apogee games I played and it was endless fun.

Cheers to Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage, whichever we love to call it most. T'was -- and still is -- a great game.

The patches we(dosbox devs) supplied enable it to run on some winxp machines(a side effect). However the experience is better in dosbox.

Re: Alien Carnage Released as Freeware
I get a strange sense of relief from this freeware release. Alien Carnage is one of the first games I ever tried to get "liberated", and the one that I felt had the least chance of success because it required John Passfield's approval, and he is still hoping to port the game to other platforms. I want to, of course, thank Joe for his efforts, but I'd also like to encourage everyone to send special thanks to John Passfield for deciding to do this. If you ever see AC for sale for your cell phone, buy it anyway! He deserves to be repaid for his generosity.

There was no retail box version. This was a direct sale only through us.

This was never in retail to my knowledge, except some shovelware FormGen CD's that were out there, but that was a very small release.

Thanks a lot for this release! I haven't yet truly tried this game, never made it past the first level in the shareware
Also Joe there's an error on the site, it says version 1.2 when it's actually 1.0

Nah, FormGen distributed Alien Carnage in retail, at least I've seen some boxes and they clearly had the FormGen logo on them.

I know who they all are. I worked here before, during, and after that time. I have a CD sitting right in front of me. Gold Medallion was shareware. FormGen was not.

I doubt it. I registered the first Duke Nukem game recently and they all say Nukum. You'd think 3DR would give us the "Nukem" version since they found out that it's not copyrighted. So I'm guessing no HH for us.

Re: Alien Carnage Released as Freeware
I think in that case it was because Nukem was an old version, and Nukum was newer - so when you get the latest version, it happens to say Nukum. I would imagine that you'd be allowed to get hold of the Nukem version, if you've paid for Nukum.

I already have the original Halloween Harry release, so I'm wondering whether it's now legal to distribute it, given the "newer" version is freeware. Aside from it being interesting because of the different name, this version also includes a program to play the music from the game (studio.exe), something that's not in the Alien Carnage release.
