What are we owed? I think about this a lot. To some it seems black and white, but I really can’t decide. Maybe both views are correct.

I agree with the theory or possibility some have indicated, that an unbridled quest for a second epic game caused this implosion. Most will never know all that was abandoned in GTA 3 due to management required deadlines. “Put it in the next game!” That is what they had to do... through Vice City and then they did everything they could in San Andreas and kept moving, epic or not. I wish 3D Realms had taken this strategy, but they didn’t.
Many of us know some of what happened to Ion Storm. I read the book (Masters of DooM, excellent book) and a great deal of what John Romero has to say about this, to this day as I frequent Romero’s forum. He was kind, supportive, and realistic to me way back when I wanted to start 3D Game Programming in the time period between Wolfenstein and DooM.

We aren’t owed anything in a rational, logical world maybe, but humans are not entirely either rational or logical. I try to respect view points different from my own to a point. Some do not. Maybe because of this, some have a sense of being led on and owed something. I do not know “what happened” to 3D Realms with DNF, but I do know that EVEN if it was because of their own actions or lack of action, I still feel sorry they have lost such a great project... or maybe because they put so much of themselves into it and lost it. The term “A for effort” comes to mind, but effort doesn’t always make the grade.

In other thoughts… There are many extreme and socially undesirable human traits, maybe this line of thinking (that we are owed) isn’t right, but it undeniably exists. And because it isn’t a rational world and being irrational is still legal, I choose to leave them alone with their view. As long as it is a two way street, I do not become aggressive.

This is only my opinion. I am not entirely sure why I am expressing it... must be irrational. I hope this is respected.

Some people blame Take2, some 3DR, but the fact of the matter is, we are not angry about changes, we are angry about absence.

However I hate it as much as any other fan when somebody throws dirt on this project.
We've all seen this crap before, a natural development of human stupidity.
I don't mean this in a bad way, it's just how the human race works.

It's easier to complain about something instead of understanding and learning about it... or even changing it! (however we can't change much about the lawsuit)

As Conan said, you can't correct people like that because they have no idea what they're talking about. If screens or footage of a 'hyped' game get leaked, there will always be a portion of people who say "This is shit, [Insert 5+ Year Old Game Here] had better graphics!" when, really, the game makes use of the same rendering techniques, etc. as any other modern game. Just because it's not Crysis levels of "better graphics" certain people think the game's graphics are dated.

Also, people always come back to "That just looks like Doom 3!" quite simply because Doom 3 led the way in programmable rendering pipelines in games. Everything since has just itteratively built on top of that shader orientated design. People see normal maps, true specular highlights, real time lighting and dynamic shadows and automatically think Doom 3 because that's where they first saw them, unless ofcourse there's something else shiny to distract them.

It's pretty much the same as with the whole "That just looks like Gears Of War!" arguement people have been making about games in the last few years. It had gritty, semi-realistic visuals set in a sci-fi world. Ofcourse any sci-fi game with gritty, semi-realistic visuals will look like Gears because that's what gritty, semi-realistic visuals look like using current hardware and techniques. If you're going for a similar base visual style to another famous game then your game will end up looking like that other one.

Interestingly, though, it only seems to be the more hardcore action games like FPS's and the like which people actually seem to care that the graphics style looks like another game. You don't hear half as much complaints that Banjo Kazooie looks like Mario or Pro Evo looks like FIFA or Guitar Hero looks like Rock Band.

Ofcourse, the people who do complain about such things as if it's actually an issue are also a very vocal minority who, chances are, buy like one or two games every year or two, which is likely to be a CoD game.
