Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
I can play Quake4 on Vista Beta 2 using Nvidia's beta Drivers so I guess Prey should work too.
But don't expect the same gaming performance, Vista is still in its Beta stages.

If not, they will probably patch it. No use patching a game for a beta OS IMO.

No I dont mind it running a bit unstable on a Beta OS, but I want full support for the Vista Final.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
It should work well on Vista Final as long as Nvidia manages to deliver good drivers.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Well, if one of the main purposes of your PC is playing Prey, I'd suggest you stick with XP until Vista gets released officially. I don't think developers of game will provide (offical) support for Vista, even though they are probably interested in the performance.

I expect Windows Vista will be backward compatible with all XP programs. Only if Microsoft really screw up it won't.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Talk to Joe or George, if Human Head Studios can't make a patch for doing Vista, then maybe on the 3DR side, they probably could reinforce a patch from 2K or something, dunno... It's a great suggestion, and could easily be worth finding out about. Especially if you go for the LCE version of Prey, you need to have all the bells and whistles needed to make the game pay off on ALL future OSes from MS...

Guys, stop panicking.
![]() You can still run Win95/98 games on XP. Do you think the same kind of thing won't happen on Vista, too - even if it doesn't run "natively"? Methinks the "chicken littles" of the world should a little more patience. ![]()

Joe, I was wondering has anyone tried it ? I mean you can download a Vista Beta right now. Just curious.
Edit: When the demo gets released I sure someone can try it, so to Babe the thread starter I say try it your self when the demo gets out. If it runs that will probably be the case the with the full version comes out. |

Just realized that people are wondering (worried?) if an unreleased game is going to run on an unreleased OS...
![]() But I'm with Joe here: it's probably not a big deal... it will be very odd for MS to release an OS that can't run WinXP games... |

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
No he was right Micki. The original poster wants to know if the game will run on Windows Vista when it comes out (not just the beta version) since it wasn't included in the requirements.
As such it's nothing to worry about at this stage since it's not even out yet. |

So actually, i'm saying he's asking two questions, and me refering to one of them) Damnit, how confusing... I'm not very good in explaining stuff in English... ![]()

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Hmmm actually I did have 2 questions in my first post :
1) Whether Prey will run on Vista Beta 2)Whether Prey will run on Vista Final If Prey has some isues with Vista Beta, not a big deal for me cause Beta is afterall a Beta software. But I want Prey to have full fledged support for Vista Final. And not all the programs that used to run on XP flawlessly is running on Vista Beta I can tell that now. Zone Alarm Pro and Bit Defender Standard ( best Firewall and Antivirus respectively IMHO ) refuse to install with compatibility messages. FlashGet and FlashFXP ( Best download manager and FTP client ) is acting funny too. I will soon install Quake 4 on this Beta and see how it is running. Too Joe, my request, is it possible that you have a go with the latest Prey RC version that you have on the Vista Version and let us know. Is that possible if you get some spare time ? |

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?

Games on the other hand don't have to mess with the system. So as long as the game doesn't do anything stupid and just uses the win32 api as it should, it should run. Back when windows 95 was released, Microsoft had to implement a "cheat" that would allow Maxis Sim City to run. (Sim City had a very bad habit of reading memory that it wasn't supposed to) Windows Vista is also promoted as a "new & improved, whiter than white" gaming platform. (And they don't mean "improved solitaire") It's very unlikely that they will go out and say "pre-2007 games will not run on Vista" When you think about it, what will make people switch to Vista? They will not switch if half of the current programs is useless on the new platform or when they have to pay to get programXP for Vista. The more programs that run on Vista without modification, the better. Microsoft knows this. |

Tolle is correct, it is most likely that prey will run. But we will be sure on release of windows Vista, until then, don't worry about it and try it when the demo is released.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
We are working on Vista support as we speak. It does not currently work with the vista beta as far as I know but that will be remedied. It may be just the matter of beta video drivers or something like that or we may have to fix it in a patch. Rest assured, at the point you can install the final vista OS we will have prey running on it.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Actually we're working with Microsoft on Vista compatibility. We will support the final release of Vista with Prey, most likely as a patched version down the road, but we will not officially be supporting Vista beta. (That doesn't mean it won't work at all, just that we won't be supporting the beta officially).
I know the engineers have been messing with the beta, but I can't answer any questions on it as it's pretty low on the priority list at the moment. |

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Appreciate the feedback fellas. I'm playing with Vista now, and if I can tame this beast to have the footprint of XP while keeping whatever enhancements come with it, I'll see about making this my default OS.
On a related note, what do you think of when somebody says, "Hey, let's make a 64-bit version"? "Are you insane, we'd have to re-write all the code from scratch!" ![]() "No prob - a couple tweaks to the engine and we're good." ![]() "How many people even use 64-bit?" ![]() "I'm all over it." ![]() |

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
StonerKen, how did you do it. I have a ATI x1900xt and the beta 2 drivers from ati dont have any OpenGL files as you already know if you have ATI too. But can you advise me which files you "switched"`?? Sure would want to try PreyDemo on the beta 5456 Vista...

Thanx for trying at least! :-) I will just wait till ATI has updated their drivers for Vista and incl. OpenGL. Will just have to wait for that as I'm _not_ re-installing XP onto my system. To do so after a Vista install would mean I really would have to start from scratch again. I will just save the game for another rainy day, or perhaps when winter starts here in Norway again and we end up drowning yet again in tons of snow. ![]() Steffen |

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
I can offer a little bit of inside information on this subject as I work on Vista specifically with application compatibility. The only stumbling block in this case is actually the drivers. Currently Nvidia's Vista Beta drivers do support Open GL but ATI's and the inbox Nvidia drivers do not. That being said, my x86 test bed that has a crappy Fx5200 card runs the Prey demo without a hitch. If you have an Nvidia card and you get the error message from Prey stating that your video card doesnt have the required components then just download the latest beta driver from Nvidia for Vista (8861) and it will run. Note that the default driver is 8862 but it doesnt include the openGL support needed to run the app.

Re: Will Prey be supported in Windows Vista ?
Since ATI and MS are supposedly "in bed together", I am shocked that ATI doesn't have a proper Vista driver out.
As much as I want to play Prey, I won't go back to XP to make it happen. By the way, I hope the Prey guys realize that Vista isn't that far off. January 2007 is only 5 months away. It's not too healthy to think of it as this far-off, futuristic OS when it's essentially just around the corner. |
