AMD Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 now available.
The new Radeon HD 6870 and HD 6850 are now available at Newegg and other retailers.

Here is a review from AnandTech.

Note that the HD 6870 and HD 6850 are not replacements for the HD 5870 and HD 5850 cards. Those will use the HD 69xx designation and are supposed to come out next month.

Hmmm,

The 6870 seems like a step DOWN from the 5870 if this graphic from the review is any indication:

If AMD had kept to their previous numbering system they would have marketed them as the HD 6770 and HD 6750.

My understanding is they plan to keep producing the HD 5770 as competition (at about the same price point) for the Nvidia GTS 450 and did not want to cause confusion having a HD 5770 and HD 6770 at the same time. Personally I think it will cause more confusion for people who do not keep up with the latest hardware news.

As I mentioned in my previous post the HD 69xx series (6970/6950) are the replacements for the HD 5870 and HD 5850.

It is atypical of the previous numbering progression - I do like the fact that it seems that ATI might be transitioning to a med-performance lower price point for their high end gear. I see it as a move to sell people more top end cards. It's a damn powerful card for the entry price point. Seems really efficient too. How much was a 5870 when it was introduced? I'd like to now see nice performance steps in the mass marketing of less than $200 cards.

I hate when they do this. Just wait for kinks to be worked out in the 32nm process and keep to the tried and tested naming scheme - Nvidia did the exact same thing with the 9*** series and it completely backfired on them.

Well, I stand corrected. Guess my 5850's safe for yet another generation.

Maybe this will allow nVidia to make a comeback. nVidia's GeForce 400 series did pretty poorly, IMO.

Except the 9800 was not at a price between the 8600 and 8800

I recently got a GTX 460 for $130 on promotion. Now I don't feel left behind near as bad as I though I would

The online street price on med power cards is nice and low, but I wonder how many people pay double at retail chins and big builders like Dell. They sold the crrap out of 240s and 250s which were not very impressive at all for what they sold them for.

Looks like I'll keep rocking HD4870's in CF for a bit to come still.

Fair point, but if it’s a card between an 5850 and a 5870 just call it a 5860.

Anyway, it’s not like a 6 series card is even needed. Apart from Crysis (poorly optimised) and Metro 2033 with aa and filters galore there’s no need for a card above an 8800 GT.

In fact, has there ever been a period where PC gaming has stalled this badly in the graphics department? We’ve been stuck with unreal engine 3 visuals since 2006.

That's true...ATI should focus more time on making Catalyst better rather than bring GPUs out with that high of a number, yet not performing as a replacement GPU. It would've been better calling these in the 67xx Series, imo. Just sounds more logical to make a 68xx series card sound like it should be an upgrade more than a downgrade from a 58xx card. Nice try, AMD, but I'm sticking with my 5850 for another year until you learn. Either that, or wait until 2011 and swap out for the GTX 5xx Series.

Checked the steam hardware survey:

Most popular card: 4800 - 8.3%

Followed by the 8800GT

Most popular OS: Windows 7 64 - 33%

Followed by Windows XP - 26%

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

Guess towards the end of next years once Win 7 take up is close to 40%-50% we might finally see DX10 become the standard.

I'm surprised that the new 6xxx cards have a significantly lower FLOPS rating than their 5xxx counterparts. But then again, the performance of a video card is not determined by its FLOPS number alone.
