Yes, they said as soon as they finish the first expansion that they would look into it.

Go to sleep.

Lameduke was the damn name of the Quake-engine version.

Actually, it was the Big Rigs-engine version if I remember correctly.

I seriously doubt it. The '99 quake engine version will never see the light of day (due to legal reasons), I assume they do the same with the 2001 version on the unreal engine. But that might be for other reasons.

Have they commented on the 2001/unreal version, and why they won't release it?

I understand that at this time it would be the least important thing to think about of course.

You must mean the '98 Quake 2 engine version. But why they have cited legal reasons, I have no idea since Quake 2 is under the GPL, so they could release it but would have to release its source code too.

If they didn't want release the source code too, then they could pay Id 10000$ for a license to keep the source code confidential and still release it.

But ofcourse that migth be a very valid reason for them not wanting to release. If they aren't willing to release the source code or have lost it and also aren't willing to pay those 10000$ then ofcours they are unable to release it.

I meant the 98 version yes.

And maybe now they can release it, I don't know, I am no lawyer and have no idea about what contract they made.

Re: lamedukenukemforever?

It would be cool to even see the Quake 2 engine version, but I believe it would be just to much effort to get permission to release that version, and in the end a very small percentage of players would even play it, let alone even know that it exists/ed.

You still make a good point that it would technically be free in accordance to the GPL licence. Only 3DR could give a correct answer. The rest is just speculation by discerning 3DR fans.

This was at first at first edited in to my post, but since you guys replied before I made the edit I thought I would post it here:

As for the 2001 version, well I don't know what is stopping them there, it migth be the fact that the Unreal Engine license only covers one game and that DNF when released will count as that game and LameDNF would be considered another game when/if released, even if it was for free.

That would mean that such a release would cost them another Unreal Engine license and that is 350000$, so that they would never do.

Another reason for them not releasing it could be that there really isn't much to release, or perhaps that they are too embarrassed of it ?

It was scrapped for a reason, another thing stopping them could be the size of the download. But that migth have changed with GameXstream. But we do know one thing for certain that is that it won't be released prior to DNF.

That does sound familiar, I don't know, but I reckon maybe GB made a comment on that some time ago.
Hmm. Where's FireFly when you need him.

Well all the work they had was from January 1998 to E3 the same year and in the 2001 edition the levels where just "early shells".

Haven't you heard about Lameduke, Lameduke was a alpha/beta version of Duke3D from 1994 released on its 1st birthday, hence the name "LameDNF", the Lame part is simply because of buggynes and incompleteness.

It could be from the version they're running right now. Does the license cover beta versions that are released for feedback, which is what lamednf (like its predecessor) would be- with alternate or scrapped gameplay.

If it runs decently I don't see why it should be a source of embarassment either.

They aren't gonna release anything at all from the current version until the ENTIRE game is released. The current version is also radicly different than the 2001.

About the embarassment it migth lie in buggyness or perhaps the fact that it not at all finished, it actually extremely FAR from finished. It migth very well run baldy, even extremely badly.

Was´nt the 2001 "version" just a techdemo that demonstrated what they could do in the Unreal engine?

No, it was the Quake 2 engine alright... They began developing in 1997, and showed off stuff in 1998...

No they did not. They(some 3 guys) did "research" with the Quake 1 engine, released a few shots from that (hence "techdemo"?) and started official development(Jan '98) once they licensed the Quake 2 engine in Dec. '97(George made an announcement post when Id sent the code). '98(Quake 2) and 2001(unreal) were all genuinely aiming to ship.

Hmm... I haven't ever heard of that research... Anyways... That just means that 3DR are EVEN better developpers than we thought, because they made it looks THIS good...

Btw, YOU RUINED THE SUBJECT!!! now i'll have to edit it again...

A lame DNF.... hmm... that'd be interesting.

I'd rather see an in game thingy.

Like maybe they could do the whole 'devolpers commentry' like they did in Riddick. Plus tons of unlockables. Maybe even an alternate opening like in The SUffering. Or, hell, maybe something altogether new.
