3d realms steam pack
Would a 3d realms steam pack be a good idea.
I really think it's a good idea because you don't see your cd's/dvd's get ****** up with scratches and stuff because it's all on your computer. And I have the Id software pack on steam to with all those old games like doom and heretic and hexen and they run fine. You don't need to mess around with dosbox and stuff because steam does it for you. I already have prey on steam and I would really buy the full 3d realms pack even if it were 100$ (75 euro's ). I really hope to see such a pack in the future.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
That's stupid cause I know that alot of people would like a 3d realms pack on steam.
3d realms could make a whole lot of money of it just like ID software. And why the hell is prey on steam when others aren't? Doom and that kind of stuff are freeware to and I still payed money for it on steam, Good tactic to earn more money if you ask me.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
If you look at the Prey steam page, you will notice that 3DR is mentioned nowhere, only Humanhead and 2K Games are there. So it follows that it wasn't 3DR's decision to put Prey on steam.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
PREY was placed on STEAM as a way of making the game playable for those who purchased it through Triton. After Triton went belly up players who had bought the game online through them.... couldn't play it.
2K arranged for a deal through STEAM so people with CD-keys for PREY would be allowed to play the game.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
I'm fine with playing the games standalone. Duke Nukem 3D and the likes can still be ordered from 3D Realm's store.
And I always make backup copies of the games I buy in case I should break them. I think you should do the same if you moan about your game cd's getting scratched. Always keep a backup copy somewhere.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
Is it okay to make a back-up copy of any PC game on a CDR or what ?
One thing I do not like about STEAM they can cause a blue screen.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
This seems silly. Like Steam is the fault here? Like Steam is the only thing that could possibly cause a blue screen? OH NO! The program might crash - I won't use it. Guess you won't use ANY program, then.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
There are other programs on my PC that cause blue screens, all can be fixed with patches. I will wait for Steam to get more reliable. I do use the software.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
The worst steam has done on my computers is run a little slow at times,
a patch was released and now steam runs just fine. Enable crash debugging in your pc properties window and download windbg, the next time you get a bluescreen, restart your pc, run windbg, point to the crash/debug file and type in: !analyze -v scroll to the bottom of the trace, and usually you find what file has caused the problem, the last time this happened to me it was buggy video drivers.. |

Re: 3d realms steam pack
The only BIG problem I've had with steam so far was when the steam servers downed.
And I couldn't log in because of that, not even in off-line mode.. Other than that I've been kicked from steamchat with a server unavailable.. But that's probably only during Valve's ruitine server checkups.. So I'm not really worried about anything steam related ATM..

Re: 3d realms steam pack
Is your info saved to the PC? If so that shouldn't happen. You can test it by unplugging your network cable or disabling the network card. If you save your info then it should work just fine.

There's only four eligible titles. One of them is in legal hell. Not much of a pack.

Uh, this is nothing new - you've been around these forums long enough to know this.
Go read the section on legal status. Nothing that I'm aware of has changed since then.

DUKE NUKEM RADIOACTIVE PACK

That's like keeping a son from being reunited with his dad! That's just sad. On another note, what about releasing a steam pack with Duke3D atomic ediotn, and the expansions, lifes a beach, Duke it out in DC, and. . whatever that third one was. I'm assuming that could be a probablem because the expansions were made by sunstorm interactive, but who knows, maybe they'd go for it.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
Unfortunately, that is the problem from not making your games in house.
Hmm...that wikipedia page is an interesting read. I doubt the situation will be resolved anytime soon, especially if the following is 3D Realm's position (since it would be kicked out of court before the preliminaries even began). Quote:

I really don't want to bump this thread since it is addressing ancient issues.
Is there anyway we could force new members to read the threads regarding these topics? A Clockwork Orange-esque forced reading scene comes to mind.

We've released more than that as freeware. I've been able to get permission from people to release as freeware, but it's not always up to us.

I thought Shadow Warrior wouldn't qualify, since it started out as a project by non-3DR people/company.
Hmmm, I'll have to look into this to see exactly what happened again.

Re: 3d realms steam pack
Of course I believe you.
If we can't believe you when it comes to things 3D Realms, who can we believe! Thanks for the clarification. I remember reading it was made by another company, unrelated to 3DR, that wasn't able to finish it for some undisclosed reason. I never would've believed that if I'd known those names. No idea where I read that any more though; long time ago.
