Prey Tutorial Requests
As the topic says! If you guys have any tutorials you'd like to see, just post here. We've already written a few and posted them but it's always helpful to hear what you guys have to say.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
skyboxes, I noticed in some maps you all had this dome like structure with a skytexture on it and various triggers or somthing. It'd be cool to know how to do those.
thats the only one I can really think of atm. edit heres some more: -ambient lighting tips/procedures -adding sounds to maps/triggering sounds -adding fx to maps like fire and being able to trigger them on and off via a console or somthing.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
Can you stick up a force-field tutorial? Forcefields that are switchable by console devices that is. That would be cool. I wrestled with that for a good hour or so the other day before just giving up.
That's about the only thing I can think of at the moment. |

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
Good, these are great! Both should be pretty simple to write up and get posted either Friday or early next week. Keep the requests coming!
By the way, are the tutorial maps included helping anyone at all? |

But I wouldnt mind seeing an optimisation tutorial. Things to look for, where to add texture xxxx, etc. For example, I've got no idea what visportal is for. I've been putting the caulking brush everywhere the player cant see, but I'm sure there are other things I could/should be doing.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
What about a "Making your first room" tutorial for n00bs?

Check these out for basic room building. It's what I read last night and they were quite good.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
I just read the first HTML tutorial and made my first room. But I noticed that the part about turning a brush into a light didn't work. I mean: the map showed the red highlighted rectangle turning into a purple bisected rectangle, and a light entity appeared in the camera view... but it did NOT emit any light! Just after that, I created a light in the normal way (pressing ESC to deselect everything, right-clicking in the map and selecting "Light"), and that new light appeared as the ONLY functional light in the room!
What did I do wrong?

The right-click way is the way to go.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
So there's NO WAY to transform a brush into a light in Preditor, right?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
Ah I just saw... well you get the radius resembling the box, but not a kind of light-emitting box which emits light from every point.

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
One thing I have trouble with is lamp models. When I attach a model to a light it always goes on the wrong end. What is the proper technique to create a light fixture model and have a light emit from it at the right place?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
You attach models to lights? How about placing a model and putting a light in front of it, to illuminate the model and the surrounding walls?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
Hello guys
It is probably already mentioned above, but the link to the tuts down below was very helpfull for me when I was trying to make levels for Doom 3. Especially the videotuts are very interesting, they can be downloaded for later use. http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3017 Start building levels now |

Someone should make such a list in that wiki... isn't it an open wiki for everyone to edit?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
I wish there were some tutorials about adding interaction. For example, how do you create a light switch that turns a light on and off?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
When and where do you get that error? Does the editor load at all? Is it a message box or a message in the editor console? Can you show me what exactly is written in your shortcut target?

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
actually it turned out I didn't read the wiki properly I thought you had to replace the target string with the string wiki supplied instead of just adding the string
I got it working now but the next challenge is trying to figure it out |

Re: Preditor Tutorials Available
Well, you're lucky. Here are the tutorials I followed to learn it.
http://www.doom3world.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=3017 Yes, they are for Doom 3, but Prey uses the Doom 3 engine, so most of that applies to Prey too.
