Re: Max Payne 2 announced
The much anticipated sequel to last year's smash hit Max Payne has been announced at E3 today, and guess what? It's "Max Payne 2". Take 2 announced today that Rockstar Games, in conjunction with Remedy Entertainment, has begun development of Max Payne 2, a sequel to the blockbuster hit Max Payne. 3D Realms will be producing Max Payne 2, as we did with the original Max Payne.

Originally developed for the PC by Remedy Entertainment and produced by 3D Realms, Max Payne debuted as an award winning and top selling PC game in July 2001. PlayStation®2 and Xbox(TM) versions of the game were shipped in December 2001, and both achieved immediate critical and commercial success. Global shipments of the Max Payne franchise have exceeded 2.75 million units to date.

Max Payne 2 is expected to ship in calendar 2003.

That's a quote from the full press release, which can be viewed on our site. Fans of Max Payne will be glad to know that there will be some continuing adventures for Max!

except they knew that already after reading the manual and the end credits
the real surprise is that RMD sold all the rights to take 2, including Max FX

WOAH ! ! ! Am I reading this right ? No, I am not talking about max payne 2, but the fact that Joe gave a release date for a game that is in development by 3drealms ?

I almost fell over when I read there was an aproximate release date for one of their games.

Anyways MP2 is going to rule. Loved the first and am going to love the second.

Remedy and Apogee collected a cool $10 million in exchange for the rights. Congrats.

My question is, what does "in conjuction with" mean, in terms of MP2 being developed by Rockstar in conjunction with Remedy? Is it a console/pc split like the original Max Payne?

Excuse my poor english, but does that mean they bought the engine or that they bought rights to use it ?

i bought the first one enjoyed it and if remedy is able to improve it for the sequel, i will happily buy that one as well. To me personally Improvement means more than 10 hours of gameplay and a better AI than just wait until i see max and then run for him guns blazing. But to each his own. I don't want to start a discussion here. Other than that best of luck for your next game .

Take two now owns the max payne name and story and has right to use it. But they don't own the Max-FX engine, they can use it all they want though.

Yup, well, Mad Onion also had the rights to use the engine, so let's hope Rockstar doesn't give some idiots the right to use it for something...

Heh, re-read the press release The stock alone is worth about $25 million now. All told, the deal should generate over $40 million when it's all said and done.

Re: Max Payne 2 announced
So both Rockstar and Remedy are developing the sequel. Now does that mean that Remedy's importance in the project has decreased?

Is Rockstar now making the biggest decisions?

Rockstar did announce that they will not be having a pc release until 2004... Hopefully what will happen is that rockstar will have a hand on the console versions and remedy will do the pc ones..

When will there be a site? Will it have Multiplayer? Will you be able to Drive cars? Will it be like Max Payne + Driver 2 + Grand Theft Auto 3? When is it coming out? Ghaa!

Rockstar isn't a PC game developer. If I'm not mistaken, DMA made all the GTA games. Rockstar was either the publisher (As a sub-division of Take2) or the console-porter.
Now, where was I? Ah...a few questions:

 • What's the release date?
 • When will you release a screenshot?
 • Will you add multiplayer to the game?
 • How do I get out of the burning restaurant in the sequel?
 • What about moving?!

Max Payne 2 is primarily a PC game.

Rockstar Canada will take care of the PlayStation 2 port like last time, and Rockstar NY provides us with authentic source material (voice actor performances, photos). We can have a bit higher production values this time around, so players (and especially reviewers) no more have to endure a cast of characters that look like Finnish geeks and their girlfriends. But it looks to me like Remedy now can afford to do two projects at once, so I bet you are putting the new mappers and stuff on Max Payne 2 and working on some suppa leet Doom III beater yourself. Carmack hasn't got a chance vs the gang of suppa leet Finnish demosceners When he's wasting time in his Ferrari you boys be working on da bomb game...

But knowing RMD there's no way the would release 2 games in the same year

Faithful?

/me tries to imagine the legions of Max Payne fans demanding that the constipated face of Max return in the sequel or else...

Sorry Skaven, I just don't see that happening

Are any major tech updates (I mean like much higher polygon counts etc) planned for Max Payne 2?

and that is not true. It's not the amount of polygons that matter in DOOM3, it's the amazing lighting system.

C'mon. You know what I mean. Further more that lighting system means squat without decent content. I'll go so far as to say Doom III is probably the least impressive piece of junk to come out of Id for some time. It's also a waste of space to launch it at something so mundane as Doom. I'm not just saying that. I'm actually pretty annoyed that so many people have rolled over so easily.
