Saying Hello :)
Some of you might remember me from back in the demo (and beta) days. If you need help, I'm the Sars-Make-Portals-With-Wrench-Mod... xD

Just here to say hello and stuff like that.

Ow, and I also wanted to tell something else.

After the Demo and Beta of Prey, my parents took my computer away, so I couldn't continue modding. I didn't buy the game because when I got my computer back, I totally forgot about the Prey (modding) scene.

EDIT: Apologies for that ^^

Anyways, now I'm currently making mods for the games Portal and Team Fortress 2 (both valve Source games).

Ow, if anyone could tell me what engine DNF will use, I'll maybe start modding on that one

Grtz,
SaRs!

Hi again!

DNF will use the Unreal Engine (Unreal games, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Gears of War, etc). It will be their own heavily modified version of the engine but getting the basics down is always a good idea.

Heck, there's even a dedicated sub-forum right here on 3D Realms Forums about the engine.

A pity this game is death...

It was a fun game tbh.

Most games like this die pretty soon though. Even STALKER died And Dark Messsiah of Might and Magic died. Numerous games using another engine die tbh. I don't understand why people don't design their own engines. Ofcourse it takes time, yes, but it's definately worth it. And you can even resell your engine afterwards.

I'm pretty sure to study informatics at university next year, and then I would love to get into the games buisiness. Can't wait xD

Ow, just, tbh, most games with their own engine survive, don't they?

Grtz,
SaRs!

I think it is the gameplay that determines the lifespan of a game. not the engine.

Ofcourse it does!

But it's a fact that a lot of games who borrowed the engine from another game die pretty soon.

Not really. Alot of games have survived borrowing other engines; for example would be Half Life which used a customised engine of Quake.

It all depends on the amount of customisability that they have provided with tools and documentation etc.

It also involves luck. Not everything would last the stand of time.

Depends on what you guys mean by "die". Just because a game isn't thriving on MP or continued sales does not mean it "died". Only a few games ever really create a large community, like with CS or Halo. Prey didn't have anything people wanted, so they moved onto the next title. Crysis will probably end up the same way once people are finished with the single player.

I don't see why Prey is always singled out, except maybe the few people who wish it did flourish in the editing and MP sector. What did you expect though, Doom 3 has bad MP optimizations and few people could play without lag.

Theres more than enough people here on 3DR who would gladly play an MP game with you (and your fun mod...hehe). Join the steam community and ask.
