Re: A piece of ROTT history
To be honest, it's been a couple of years since I looked at them, I don't remember specific content at the moment.

It's just people standing in a pose so pictures can be taken. Turning them a few degrees to get another angle. Was all still picture stuff.

It's not full motion video where bloopers were recorded for ingame. Remember, this was late 1993, game tech was much different then.

About the only real silliness that I can remember was what's in my avatar. During all my screen grabs, the Dopefish throw pillow you see was behind me - was one of those "I know it was there when we made it" things, that no one else would know about. At the last second, we grabbed another frame where I was holding the Dopefish pillow in front of me. Ended up as the avatar image you see here.

Beyond that, I don't recall much stupidity during the videos, except the odd time someone would walk by the camcorder recording all this and make a face at it or something.

I was looking on the server for something else today, and found this:

There's a few more here, but it's nothing terribly exciting, IMO.

The wooden square was something we built where all the actors stood (or in my case, sat) and then were rotated to capture frames for use in the game.

That's awesome! I think I've seen a few other pictures, one being Tom Hall and the other picture being William. I like these pictures from scenes and stuff from older games, kinda cool to look back on that time. Romero has a few from the early days of id and through the Doom years, including the chainsaw Tom borrowed and never gave back .

Would you happen to have more from ROTT Joe?
Well, I took a look in the pics directory on the ROTT CD. Here's what I found there:

This is probably the picture of William Scarboro (RIP) that was mentioned above. His character never made it into any version of the game at beta level. It was jettisoned pretty quickly, and to my knowledge, no copy of the game with his character in it survives, unfortunately.

I've had Tom Hall, Mark D, & Dose all look in their archives, and no one has a copy of that version.

Internally we call those version the "Hot buns" versions, because one of the chracters then said "Lookin' for some hot buns". Not sure why.

I just had a look through my company photo archive. I have lots of pictures of the people who worked here then, but no more "character" pictures like that. I checked all my "real" pictures, as well as the digital archive. No luck.

The only source that I can think of will be scans from the videotapes.

Ah, the memories. I can only hope that ROTT will make a great comeback one day or another, of course, a sequel may never happen. It's a good dream, but history vs. the future of ROTT, well, good thought.

Then get the take right because Joe kept stapling himself and other people?!

This is some cool stuff Joe. I think if I remember correctly I was the one who alluded to the William Scarboro picture, and that's the one I remember, it was on some ROTT Fansite.

Great Stuff

I asked this a long time ago. Just the process and how it's very time consuming.

Now a days alls that's needed is a green screen and a digital camera and some editing software. Oh, and a lot of time.

Interesting to see shots from the day of shooting. I see you guys were apparently using prop Lugers for handguns, too. (An inspiration from the days when it was a Wolf3D expansion pack? )

I doubt it. When it was nothing more than a Wolf expansion pack, it truly was just in the same style as Wolf art was. The old ROTT deisgn spec on this website has some of that art, I think.

No, I think it's just a case of using whatever was available.

And yes, my line was Bleh!

Could've sworn it was blood, though that does sound kind of silly. I'll go listen again.

Just listened to it again for the first time in years and it is indeed "B'leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!!"

Anyway, the best boss line in ROTT, or indeed any game, has to be:

"They'll bury you in a lunchbox!!"

Yeah, indeed!

I did notice the original design specs for ROTT and the development art. Among those wall images, I can see at least that the pink brick wall remained the same as it was back in those days. I also find it interesting that the projectile image when the Overpatrols shoot their nets at you was completely unchanged.

Then again, reading about the development of good games is always interesting.

The Bleh! was an adlib of mine when I was recording.

It's a sound from an old Tom Hall game for the Apple II called "Legend of the Star Axe". It's the game I'm playing in that picture on the ROTT CD that gets posted on the forums from time to time where I'm wearing a Dio hat pointing at a computer (my Apple IIgs) with a really maniaial look on my face.

Gotta hate to bump this thread after 2 years, but I guess this is "new" and on topic.

Have the resources for the alternative character models cut from the game ever been recovered? I think Joe3DR already said they were "lost" before but maybe they popped up in the meanwhile or I got something wrong.

I've been digging up the web on rise of the triad recently and found some screenshots (downloaded from http://www.apogee1.com/rottsite/access.html) which seem to originate from some beta with the cut characters in place and decided to re-upload them for easier viewing pleasure, even tho checking it out yourself is worth it :P

While the low guard alternates are good, I'm not sure the first two you link to are really alternate monks. We had two monks in the game anyway, I can't recall right now that we even had any other monks captured. I only remember Allen Blum & Lee Jackson as monks, which both were in the final game.

According to the ending of ROTT Mark Dochterman was also digitized as a monk, with his character-set being cut from the game. From my judgement the frame used in above screenshots are the same as the one used in the ending for the cut away monk.
