Shadow Warrior sequel?
I would love to see a sequel to Shadow Warrior! I really liked that game.
How do you all feel about a sequel?

Mars, read through the old msgs here - this gets brought up a zillion times. There are no plans for sequels to any of our games except Duke Nukem.

It's very simple, company makes game, game sells 1.6 million copies, company makes sequel.
Company makes another game, game bombs, company doesn't make sequel. Simple.

When I played the shareware of it, I couldn't figure out how to pass the first level... I spent like 2 hours on it and said screw it... those car things confused me... I didn't know what I was supposed to do... and yeah... any game that I can't figure out how to play the shareware version of I'm definately not paying for... it's all the shareware's fault that it didn't sell well :P.

Re: Shadow Warrior sequel?
There are several reasons to SW failure to sell.
Some say that it was cause it came after Quake, and that the audience was not willing to accept a 2.5d engine game anymore, the shareware was also a reason, also that the Lo Wang character was very controvercial. There is that elusive thing that make a certain game an all time classic, and another a failure. IMO SW was just not "it".

There's many different words that can be used for this situation.

"Permitted" is one. "Prevented" is another.

No one is actually "prevented" from making one, just not "permitted." Illegal copy-right infringing fan-made stuff is made all the time (anyone remember DeHackEd?), and the game companies only have so much power to stop it. There's really nothing they could realistically do to stop the flow of it if something like that were made.

Remember, all you need to do is make Night Knight starring Wo Lang, and nothing will be wrong. As long as the fans know its a SW mod, they'll play it.

Re: Shadow Warrior sequel?
This kinda got me thinking about DNF mods. You know how all these companies are releasing expansion packs for their games? I don't know how feasible this idea is, but what if an expansion pack, instead of being an extension of the original game, had a small extension to the game and like 3 or so mods that could be completely different? For instance, imagine buying an expansion for DNF with like 3 DM levels, a quickie 3 level single player episode, 1 new weapon, 1 new monster, something like that that only enhances the game a big, but along with it could have a Shadow Warrior addon with like 5 levels in it, completely new weapons, etc. Not only that, but it could have a few other completely different games in there, but only short games built onto the same game.

The problem with this idea is that it would be too much work. This is where one the cool aspects comes in. Say your starting up your game making business and want to make some easy money but don't want to wait to make a whole game? You could make a mini-game for 3DR to package with the expansion and get a percentage of the royalties, while 3DR only supervises, publishes, and works on say 1 of the MODS.

The great thing about this is buying it not only accentuates the game you already have, but gives you a few other mini-games to play. This can also help the longitivity of the game by giving players like 10 more games to add on to rather than a single one. Look at the popularity of Team Fortress, and imagine buying a cd with all those goodies in it, it would be awesome, and those small companies can make a little money to get them started, and 3DR gets most of the profits, with very little work.

There's how you can have your Shadow Warrior II, and while it wouldn't have a full game in it, imagine what mods you can make with the DNF engine as your base and already half the work done for you. Also, 3DR can see if maybe Shadow Warrior would be more deserving of a sequel if the mini game became one of the most popular.

What do you guys think? Sound good?

Joe - is this idea even feasible?

One way to find good mods for the CD would be to have a competition, where people create totally original addons within a certain time and the winners get on the CD along with the mini-games made by other companies.

Re: Shadow Warrior sequel?
Personally I would love to see another SW game. The humor and ambience were excellent. To me, it did not matter whether the game is 2.5D or 3D, it was the gameplay and the humor that caught me. If anyone has ever played the Thief series by LGS, then you guys can vouche for me on that one. As for the wanker who couldn't get past the shareware level, I pity you. I'm not saying im a loser and play games all day, but I introduced the game to one of my friends who has never played a computer game before. He laughed his arse off the whole time.....and passed the level. If 3D Realms decided to revamp SW, use the Duke Engine and market the product well, I'm sure it would sell. With my piece said (and I hope I didnt offend anyone. P ), I'm off to work. Late

Re: Shadow Warrior sequel?
I absolutely loved SW. The forests and the magic carpet ride through volcanic caverns were among the most romantic moments I've ever experienced in any game. It really still stings in this respect that 3D Realms isn't going to do a SW2. Even the add-on Wanton Destruction was never released -- I could never understand why.

Wow, the logic in this forum sometimes amazes me, now you're starting to blame Ken Silverman for 3dR's decision to use the Build engine for SW?
what next? Blaming Carmack for the buggy release of SiN?

And in the manner of the amazing deductions:
Quote:
3DR can see if maybe Shadow Warrior would be more deserving of a sequel if the mini game became one of the most popular.
, I have a better Idea, put the old Apogee logo in one of the DM maps, and if that map is the more played one, rename the company back to Apogee and start making side scrollers.

Face it, the game has bombed (or as Joe calls it "didn't sell alot") and you don't make sequels for failed games. They don't even release an Addon for it.
