Getting old games working
I have a PII 300mhz that i'm just putting a bunch of old dos games on. When I play games like Duke Nukem or Monster Bash It just doesn't seem to work very well. Would it help if I went and found my windows 3.1 disks from my really old computer and used that version of dos? I don't know if I can post this here but if it helps most of the games I want to put on it are old Apogee games.

Re: Getting old games working
It probably has more to do with your sound card then DOS itself. It's probably a lost cause, but I believe there is a good DOS emulator out there that can get these things to work.

Re: Getting old games working
Actually, I don't think it's a problem with my sound card. Things just mess up...for example when I start Monster Bash it should show the kid shooting his sling shot and the zombie but instead it just shows the kid for a split second and then the blood comming down the screen. When I play the actual game the scrolling seems really messed up as well. The sound on the other hand is perfect and I don't have a problem with it.

Re: Getting old games working
Don't go with Windows 3.1 if you do. I've got a dual boot set up between Windows XP and DOS 6.22 on my old comp. All those old games I run on DOS 6.22, took a while to setup but now I can play everything again

Re: Getting old games working
moron - I'm not sure what video card is in the computer right now. It used to be voodoo 3 but then I sold that to someone because I didn't think I would need to use that computer again. I'm pretty sure that the card I have now is made by a company called "MPact" or something like that. It came with the computer (it's an old gateway).
I have another question now as well. I'm thinking about just installing windows 98se on my XP computer because I don't do much gaming (besides simple games). The most high tech game I play right now would have to be either UT (original), or Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project. But anyway, my question is about sound cards. The sound in Duke 3D doesn't work well on my XP machine. I was wondering if I played it in dos if it would be any different. I know a lot of people had problems when it came to sound in Duke 3D while playing in XP. I would like to know if sound cards are a big problem while playing things in dos. If someone has a link to a site with info on what sound cards work in dos that would be a big help. -Thanks |

Re: Getting old games working
yes Dos is difrent but its not a shure thing that it would work there ether the sound card you are using must have dos real mode drivers otherwise your stuck
also if your video card dosint work well with ega games it really wont make much difence wether you run them from dos or win if you are really into your old games I would go to goodwill and try to find a 486 to use along side your curint system |

Re: Getting old games working
If using Win2K, use setup programs to disable sound to get it to work. In XP, right click the executeable files and run them in compatibility mode for Win95. Setup sound for MT-32 (Midi) or General Midi, and Sound Blaster for Wave.
Use Moslo to slow down 'unruly' games. |
