That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
I just read about the doom reference on wikipedia, and I was hoping to comfirm whether it's true that id software sued 3D Realms for this. Thanks

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
Nah, they didn't. Besides, ID put Commander Keen in Doom, so 3D Realms had the right to do the same, eh?

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
As far as I recall, ID Software made Commander Keen. Apogee only published it.

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
I think 3D Realms and Id have known each other a long time and know how much they can get away with.

3DR and id are basicly brother-companies.

Yeah... I find it strange that 3DR/Apogee isnt on the "Friends of id" page...

While they are "related" I'd imagine their independant of each other. Like, all those other companies have helped id in some way or another. HumanHead is there though.

Of cource they're independant..! Apogee helped id before though (Wolf3D, CK)...

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
ID software did try to take legal action, but failed. So much for brotherly love. =p

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
My respect for ID dropped a bit
I don't exactly think they should sue over that... If 3D Realms said that they invented Doom Marine, then I would agree with ID.

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
Well they failed because it falls under spoof. The art isn't a straight rip off of DOOM. ( I find it funny that the character actually looks like the DOOM 64 marine.)

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
That's quite laughable if they did pursue legal action over what was obviously a homage to the Doom series.

I mean we all get what it is, but its funny that ID is so uptight about DOOM. They even shutdown mods for their own games (like A doom quake II port, im still shocked that SOG and YPOD managed to release without shutdowns (YPOD is Your Path To Destruction, a quake 1 doom tc, and SOG is wolf3d quake1 and doom all rolled into one mod.) Silly game developers.

I happen to agree with the mods part as they can't have people one-up them for free, thats the whole point in owning an IP. However I don't think it's necessary to sue for such tiny things as a cameo or reference. |

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
This is totally OT, but seeing the word 'cameo' reminded me.
In Kameo, theres no cameos

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
You do realise that video games have been around since the late 70s right?
Anyway the predecessor to Wolfenstein 3D was Castle Wolfenstein. CW, WOLF3D, WOLF3D:SOD, RTCW

Yes, the first WW2 game as far as I know was castle wolfenstein, but I bet there are ones before that even.

Well, here's the thing, 3DR was making Blood for sometime, and even that sprite was in there during the 3DR beta.

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
Didn't 3D Realms make the weapons, enemies and textures? Monlith just made the levels, right?

Re: That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
Basicly, a lot of the actual basis for the game was 3drealms work. But yes, it could be said that the levels were by monolith. Not counting some things of course.
