That's one doomed space marine! Did id software sue?
I just read about the doom reference on wikipedia, and I was hoping to comfirm whether it's true that id software sued 3D Realms for this. Thanks

Nah, they didn't. Besides, ID put Commander Keen in Doom, so 3D Realms had the right to do the same, eh?

As far as I recall, ID Software made Commander Keen. Apogee only published it.

I think 3D Realms and Id have known each other a long time and know how much they can get away with.

While they are "related" I'd imagine their independant of each other. Like, all those other companies have helped id in some way or another. HumanHead is there though.

ID software did try to take legal action, but failed. So much for brotherly love. =p

Duke comments, "That's one doomed space marine." This quote became famous after websites dedicated to Duke Nukem 3D began reporting that Doom's developer, id Software, had filed a lawsuit against Apogee Games and 3D Realms, trying to obtain an injunction to remove it. (The suit was ultimately unsuccessful.)

My respect for ID dropped a bit

I don't exactly think they should sue over that... If 3D Realms said that they invented Doom Marine, then I would agree with ID.

Well they failed because it falls under spoof. The art isn't a straight rip off of DOOM. ( I find it funny that the character actually looks like the DOOM 64 marine.)

That's quite laughable if they did pursue legal action over what was obviously a homage to the Doom series.

More like a friendly pie in the face kind of thing. Its like A lot of horror movies do where they will have a poster or a reference to another horror movie and then have the monster show up and trash the object.

I mean we all get what it is, but its funny that ID is so uptight about DOOM. They even shutdown mods for their own games (like A doom quake II port, im still shocked that SOG and YPOD managed to release without shutdowns (YPOD is Your Path To Destruction, a quake 1 doom tc, and SOG is wolf3d quake1 and doom all rolled into one mod.) Silly game developers.

Whats your point? So is 3DRealms, they dissallow the use of Duke Nukem or the game's likeness in any mods or fan created maps.

I happen to agree with the mods part as they can't have people one-up them for free, thats the whole point in owning an IP. However I don't think it's necessary to sue for such tiny things as a cameo or reference.

This is totally OT, but seeing the word 'cameo' reminded me.

In Kameo, theres no cameos

Not entirely true, 3D Realms knocks out mods for other game engines (like Half-Life and Half-Life 2. I was involved in an HL one in fact.), but if you were to make say, Commander Keen 3D tc, I doubt they'd put their foot down on ya. In fact there are plenty of Duke TCS that do cross overs that have never been shutdown.

You do realise that video games have been around since the late 70s right?

Anyway the predecessor to Wolfenstein 3D was Castle Wolfenstein.

CW, WOLF3D, WOLF3D:SOD, RTCW

There's this incomplete list.

I believe the first WWII themed game was 1942 (from 1984)

Well, here's the thing, 3DR was making Blood for sometime, and even that sprite was in there during the 3DR beta.

Didn't 3D Realms make the weapons, enemies and textures? Monlith just made the levels, right?

Basicly, a lot of the actual basis for the game was 3drealms work. But yes, it could be said that the levels were by monolith. Not counting some things of course.
