Question "Turbo start" in Wacky Wheels??
I'm sure I've managed to get the turbo boast (with flames coming out of the car and everything) by hitting the accelerate button at exactly the right time when a race starts... I'm confident I have done that several times some decade ago... But when I tried to do it yesterday, I couldn't get the trick to work, no matter how many times I tried...

Then I looked up "Wacky Wheels" and "turbo start" on Altavista, and found this so-called "FAQ" (it's more like a manual that's hard to take serious) which clearly says "there is no such thing as turbo start"... But why does the FAQ say that?? Obviously more folks have been experiencing turbo start, and asked it up, otherwise it wouldn't be mentioned at all, of course!

So please tell me, is there really a such thing as "turbo start" in Wacky Wheels??

Start Wacky Wheels with "ww turbo", and then you can get turbo at any time by pressing brake and fire at the same time. As far as I know, there is no special code to do a turbo start like what you describe. See my website for more information if you haven't yet.

I bet that after many years your memory has been twisted and mixed with memories from other racing games, as there should be no such thing in Wacky Wheels.

I have exactly the same memory and problem.
I also remember that when you press up too soon that little puff of smoke disapears and you can't get that turbo boast anymore.

Maybe Andy Edwardson (the programmer of Wacky Wheels) still remembers if there is any such feature. He hasn't posted on these forums for years, but maybe Joe can give us his email address. How about it, Joe?

No. I don't give out any developer's email just like that. Andy was hard to get a hold of for the interview. I asked him about 3 -4 months before he finally replied.

I thought there was a turbo start as well... but I have played (and seen played) more racing games, so I could be wrong.
Maybe it was Mario Kart I'm confused with, since it's pretty similar obviously.
Usually it's accomplished by pressing the button right as the light turns green (or whatever indicates the instant you can start).
Hmmm, I'll try if I can make it work sometime.

I've never played Mario Kart, so I can't have got the idea of an existing turbo start in WW from there... The only way that I can possibly have been mislead is that the "turbo boost" comes from two player racing when one player accidently drives into the rear of the other in the beginning of a race... That results in a turbo boost too, but not for many more seconds than the actual collision lasts... I think that "two player theory" is pretty unlikely too, so there _must_ be a way to get that turbo boost! Someone please enlighten us!

Yeah, there is a "FAQ", although most of the information is highly biased and lacking facts... I'd say it's more like an extended manual to the game... But the "questions and answers" section actually takes up "how do I get the turbo start", though the answer is that there isn't a such thing... But if there wasn't, why did the question appear in first place?? And why do I, and appearantly several other forum members, have a memory of a such function??

Look at this from the cheat codes section of the FAQ.
[Wacky Wheels]

+ Cheat Command Line Parameters - The following command line parameters can
be used in both the shareware and registered
versions of the game:

/2 - Fast gameplay.
/3 - Really fast gameplay.
/debug - Create a ERR.LOG file as you play.
turbo - Activate the turbo key [brake]+[fire].
jump - Activate the jump key [brake]+[accelerate].

Yes, but it seems unlikely that I would have been holding down the brake button at the beginning of a race... And I hardly even played with that cheat code activated... I was much more fond of the jumping and ice cube parameters...

I assume you're talking about this page: Pyro Veston's FAQ, which looks like somebody had too much time on his hands and decided to write up a "FAQ." The real FAQ that people are talking about is the Rinkworks Apogee FAQ. It does seem odd that there would be a secret turbo start feature that isn't mentioned in the official Apogee cheats page. At first, I thought maybe you had just accidentally activated the turbo cheat that Joe and I both already mentioned, but then I tried it and realized that not only would you have to accidentally push down brake and fire before the race, but you'd also have to forget to hit the accelerator or it won't work. That doesn't sound too likely to happen. Hopefully, someone will figure out how to do this and let us know.
