Installation fails with rlmfc.dll error
I have problems with the installation of Max Payne, on a new computer with a recent fresh installation of Windows 98 (second addition) - and full update patches from windowsupdate.
The installation gives errors, wil rlmfc.dll and then trying to run the program fails immediately. Details below. Spec: Windows98, second edition, + web updates. AMD XP 2100+ 512Mb ram 160Gb disk I start with a full installation It installs completely, to 100%, then give the "detecting system.." box, then after half a second the following box: Ikernel This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. Details: | IKERNEL executed an invalid instruction in | module RLMFC.DLL at 017f:02635a28. | Registers: | EAX=00000004 CS=017f EIP=02635a28 EFLGS=00010206 | EBX=006f4240 SS=0187 ESP=006de610 EBP=006de724 | ECX=00000001 DS=0187 ESI=00000004 FS=1207 | EDX=0000000a ES=0187 EDI=006f475b GS=0000 | Bytes at CS:EIP: | 0f 56 ff 8b 93 03 05 00 00 8b 4d e8 83 ca 20 f7 | Stack dump: | 008001d5 008001f6 00000000 00000094 00000004 0000000a 040a08ae 00000001 00204120 006de674 00000060 81d26960 00000024 bff7a3a0 81d02000 006de68c I hit CLOSE, then immediately, another box: | IKERNEL caused an invalid page fault in | module MFC42.DLL at 017f:5f40626c. | Registers: | EAX=0269c9d0 CS=017f EIP=5f40626c EFLGS=00010202 | EBX=00000000 SS=0187 ESP=006de728 EBP=006de848 | ECX=00000011 DS=0187 ESI=00000000 FS=1207 | EDX=81d3d750 ES=0187 EDI=0269c9d0 GS=0000 | Bytes at CS:EIP: | 8b 87 50 10 00 00 3b c3 8d b7 50 10 00 00 0f 85 | Stack dump: | 00000000 00000000 5f400000 0000009c 020fdb64 006de7b0 015b3318 00000000 006de764 00000000 006de79c 006de764 00000000 00f4a4d0 00000000 00000010 Then get the "InstallShield Wizard Complete" message, which continues as normal from this point on. Then, whenever you try to start the game, you immediatiely get : Maxpayne This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor. Any help gratefully received.. I've wanted this program for ages - only just got a PC powerful enough, and it won't work! (PS Bring out a unix version, and we won't have to suffer stuff like this!!) Re: Installation fails with rlmfc.dll error
This sounds tricky... I don't think I've met this kind of an error yet. The game's "autodetect settings" seems to crash during the install. A few questions:
Do you have DirectX8 installed? If yes, then are you able to run "dxdiag" from Start Menu\Run prompt? If yes, are you able to run the "Test Direct3D" from the DxDiag Display Tab? If yes, then please email me your dxdiag information. Also, please send me a screenshot of your installation folder contents, or preferably from the Command Prompt do something like "cd c:\program files\max payne", "dir /s >files.txt" and send me the files.txt as an attachment. Yes, 8.1 > If yes, then are you able to run "dxdiag" from Start Menu\Run prompt? Yes, although I have to skip some of the system tests on startup, as it freezes otherwise. > If yes, are you able to run the "Test Direct3D" from the DxDiag Display Tab? Yes, works fine. > If yes, then please email me your dxdiag information. Ok, coming in an email Thanks, Jamie |

Re: Installation fails with rlmfc.dll error
UPDATE: I've solved the problem!
Apparently, it's to do with a conflict between the SoundBlaster Live!, and the DirectX routines - Soundblaster live installs a file c:\windows\system\vmm32\vmcpd.vxd that is incompatible with direct x. I regressed this file to the one on the windows98 disk, and everything seems fine now. - Also "dxdiag" doesn't hang. The weird thing is, it's only certain aspects of direct x that were at fault - i.e. games such as half-life and blue-shift played without a hitch. More information here: http://www.spacewalker.com/english/s...8SBproblem.htm and here: http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl...%26start%3D20% 26sa%3DN You may want to add this to your problem FAQ/knowledge base etc.. especially as Max Payne is the only program I have that actually gets tripped up by this problem! Cheers, Jamie |
