Good mods or TCs?
Well, since I apparently made my appearance on these forums on a bad foot, maybe a more light-hearted thread will ease things a bit.
As a person who recently got eDuke, I was wondering if there were any good mods, TCs, or user maps out there that you would recommend? If there are rules against this kind of thread, I'm sorry, I didn't see anyhting about it in the sticky threads. Maybe I missed something? So, yeah. Any good maps or something? All I have is Moonbase Accident, (which I find pretty entertaining, actually) but I want to expand my "collection." |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
What's going on now? I'm trying to run "The Dream," but it doesn't work right. It loads the standard episode thing. Loading it form the map replaces the "Over here" (I saw it on a video) with Duke's "Game Over!"
No correct music...I want to play Nuclear Showdown, but that also refuses to work right...pleas,e am I doing something wrong? I have the most recent version of eDuke... |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
First of all did you ever get the original Duke3D to work correctly? You never said so in either of your threads.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
I would guess his Dir is a mess and has not got Eduke32 working correctly. But we wouldnt know for sure because he has not provided us with a log file yet.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Look in the "Folder" where EDuke32 is... There should be a file called eduke32.log (It might just look like a text files called eduke32 if anything after the "." in a filename is hidden on your system)

Re: Good mods or TCs?
That would be it... Next time try code tags... Where you wrap the test with (code)(/code) (Replacing the brackets with square brackets.)
It looks like it's loading the default con files (GAME.CON, USER.CON, and DEFS.CON) With Eduke32 you can safely delete them but if you still use the original DOS executable occasionally you might need them... I would just "Cut" the three files from your Duke folder and put them somewhere else. If it screws something up, you can copy the files back. Tell us if this works. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
It looks like a CON error with Nucular Showdown's CON files (Not the ones you just moved but 3rd party code) It says you're missing a "DUKEWEP.CON". If you find it, try copying it to your Duke Nukem folder and launching the game again. It might still be in the NS archive.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Thanks. That actually helped a lot! Hmm, but apparently Nuclear Showdown comes with D.C, yet when I select it, I'm put back to the menu. ANy ideas for this one? Should I bring up another log?
And on another note, I still can't run A Dream from the .bat file. Unless it's actually in one of the episodes...

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Nucular showdown is an Episode only available if you actually own "Duke it out in DC".
Otherwise, the button won't do anything. Duke It out in DC is a retail TC for the original game. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Try doing a fresh install for each mod you want to play. In an empty folder place the duke3d.grp, the eduke32 files and one mod. In your last log post it appears you have files from Duke it out in DC and Nuclear Showdown in the same folder.
Edit: You are trying to load the Nuclear Showdown Mod right?

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Yeah, I figured he should just try to get one thing at a time working. If he gets Duke it out in DC working fine. Same for the Nuclear Showdown mod. Start simple and make sure one thing at a time works. It would be a lot easier to figure out any problems that way. Anyway I'm off to bed. Good luck and good night.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Thank you. Well, since we're going to go with the One-step-at-a-time method, What about A Dream? I can't get it to run from the batch file, meaning no creepy whisper, no creepy music, etc.

Quote:
"Installation: No need to unzip archive, just place files "A.dream.zip" and "A.dream.bat" in game folder and run bat file. If you use eDuke32 mod will run flawlessly." To test it here's what I did: 1- Made a new folder. 2-Placed a copy of the Atomic Edition duke3d.grp in that folder. (Only duke3d.grp) 3-Unzipped a copy of the latest version of EDuke32 (3-13-09) into that folder. 4-Unzipped A.dream1.2_install.zip into that folder. 5-Clicked A.dream.bat and it loaded okay and took me to the menu. Try that and let us know how you make out. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Well, what happened was that when I hit "New Game," I was taken to the regular selection screen. (L.A. Meltdown, Lunar Apocalypse, etc.) The Ocotabrains had the appropriate sounds from The Dream, but no map.
I eventually did fix the run problem, I removed the USER.CON file, and suddenly I could select it. But it still works incorrectly. In particular, the "Over here" whisper is still replaced with Duke's "Game Over!", the images in the long hallway don't make that scratchy noise, and the music doesn't change from that dreamy/eerie song to that downright horrifyingly creepy song when in the nightmare section. Should I play it and post the log? Oh, and I don't have 1.2. The website that has it absolutely will not load. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
The log you posted has this line:
Download OpenAL 1.1 or greater from http://www.openal.org/downloads.html Did you ever download that program? You need it to play ogg (sound and music) files in some mods. Also if a mod calls for duke3d.grp ONLY make sure thats all you copy from the CD. I guess you found that out when you removed the USER.CON file. ![]() Last if you can't download version 1.2 of The Dream I will upload it to Filefront and post the link here later. Edit: Here's the link: http://files.filefront.com/Adream12+.../fileinfo.html

Re: Good mods or TCs?
ALright, I have Open AL. So, we have the whisper back. But, the music still doesn't change, and speaking of that, I have to hit esc., go inot the sound options, turn off the music then turn it back on again to even get the music to start playing. And I've tried doing that to switch the music, but no, it just restarts the original.
And the scracthing sound from the images in the nighmare entrance are still absent. And by the way, I may be off but...did you make The Dream? |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
No, Zykov Eddy made it. He's made some other stuff you may want to try later.
As far as the music problem you are having, I don't know whats going on. I turn the music way down when I play so I don't even notice if there is a problem with the music. Have you tried version 1.2 yet? |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Yes, I have. I have 1.2, yet it still doesn't work.
And now Moonbase Accident doesn't work. *sigh* Well, for the record, I re-installed Duke 3D, this time without the curse of D.C. So now I have 2 versions of Duke 3D Atomic, the first version I owned, the one eDuke happens to be applied to, and the new one, which is just Atomic on its own. I've become quite wary of eDuke, so I don't know if I'm willing to risk losing the fresh one. (ANd I noticed both of your names have "eddy" in the title, which is why I thought oyu might be the same. Not saying any similarities in usernmaes means there the same person, it was just a harmless idea and I thought I should ask.) |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Install Duke3D on your computer once. Then you can make a new folder. Copy the Duke3D.GRP into it along with a port and mod. Leave the original files in the original directory alone! Only use them to copy into other folders. You can copy the files into new folders as many times as you want. At one time I had over fifty Duke mods in their own folders, and over two hundred Doom mods in there own folders. It's no big deal. You'll get the hang of it. Different people do things differently. I like to keep things separate. Install, play, delete is the way I do it now.
No problem about the Eddy mix up. I wish I did have the talent to make quality maps like a lot of people on this forum.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
I've just tested The Dream. Same crud. Also, the Crosshair appears as a black box now. As does the DUKE NUKEM 3D in the pause menu. Music still refuses to start...

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Why not take a break from The Dream and try to play a different mod? See if you have better luck with something else. If you can get some different mods to work correctly you can always go back and try The Dream again later.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Alright. I don't think I need to move Nuclear Showdown, it seems like it works best when it shares data with the main Duke 3D file...(The "episode" is fused with the other four, five if you count D.C. And yes, I just threw the mods in the main D3D folder. They have since moved out, with the exception, of course, of Nuclear Showdown, for reasons already stated; It works just fine.)
Moonbase Accident I got working again; although the blocky text/crosshair remains a problem. So, The Dream is essentially the only one that isn't working properly. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
I just tried The Dream for myself. I got the same crosshair problem you did, a black box instead of crosshairs, and no music too. I don't know whats going on. I used a different version of EDuke32 the first time I played it. Tomorrow I will reinstall it with an older version of EDuke32 and see if that makes any difference. I'll let you know how I make out.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Hey, I'm back. I couldn't wait so I installed it using a version of EDuke32 from December 15, 2008. Same problem, but I did get the crosshair to reappear by going into the video setup, changing from software to 32bit, then render setup and changing Anisotropic Filtering to 4X. The crosshair then looked like it was supposed to. When I went back to software mode the crosshair was still okay. I don't know why this worked except that my video card is a piece of crap and it may be causing my problems. Do you know what video card you have installed? If you have a fairly new computer you should not be having the same problem.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Just a heads up... But I think it would only need the OpenGL renderer (Would work best on 32-bit)... I highly doubt that filtering would change anything. The black square you are describing sounds like a "Dummytile" a tile used specifically to sub in for an OpenGL (16 or 32-bit) texture in Classic (8-bit) mode.

Re: Good mods or TCs?
Nope. They're gone.
Messing with the render did help a bit, but those little blue things still appear as black boxes. |

Re: Good mods or TCs?
I don't know whats going on with it either. I reinstalled it again and the crosshair was a black box. I changed the setting and it made no difference this time. Then I quit the game and started it up again and the crosshair was okay. The blue water monsters were okay too. If this is the only mod you have a problem with consider yourself lucky. I still have a bunch of Duke files I have not added to my site yet because I have not been able to get them to work correctly.
