2 Free Apogee/3D Realms games on the next PC Gamer CD!
Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd mention that the CD that comes with the July 2000 issue of PC Gamer magazine will feature 2 full versions of Apogee/3D Realms classics:

- Duke Nukem II
- Terminal Velocity

Plus 10 more games! Check out my original posting for the complete list: http://www.3drealms.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/001787.html

This issue hits newsstands on June 13th, 2000. If you like these games, this is an issue not to miss!

I got mine on Monday. Isn't it fun reliving the past. I never got to play the full version of Terminal Velocity, but now I can.

The Games I'm most exited about are Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed
- Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
- Alone in the Dark
- Wing Commander
- Duke Nukem II
- King's Quest
and
- Descent

It's gonna be an awesome issue (but I haven't even gotten June yet!)

I haven't read PC Gamer in quite some time, but I've got to check this out. I have the Apogee games and King's Quest and UU doesn't really interest me. I'd like to try out Alone in the Dark and Wing Commander.

Well yes, it would be illegal, if we didn't agree to it.

Just got this today. I already got Duke2, Monkey Island, and TV full so that doesn't matter (BTW, I haven't checked, but I'm guessing the version of Terminal Velocity on the PCG CD is the version without cinematics--if that's the case, it sucks j/k, the movies don't really add a lot to the game).

On the other hand, I tried to play Alone in the Dark cause they say it's a really good and scary adventure game, but it it gives me a DOS illegal op...I'll try the tips they give in the magazine at some point.

I'll probably also install Need for Speed, Descent and/or Wing Commander.

If the tips in the mag don't help, PCGamer.Com has setup a "Classic Games Support Shelter" with tips and suggestions as to how to get some of these older games to run on newer computer systems. It also has a messageboard forum for this as well.

I personally love "Alone in the Dark". It is still a fun game to play, I found that I eventually had to use a walkthrough though because of how complex the endless puzzles can be sometimes

Not everything that happens here is information meant to be known by the public.

In other words, "none of your business".

Has anyone gotten this? I'd be curious to know which version of Terminal Velocity is on there - the floppy disk or the CD version.

And before you ask, no - I don't know myself, because I didn't become aware of this until I got an email on it shortly before this was posted.

It contains the floppy disk version.

Does this mean that these games have become freeware?

No, it does not mean that at all. The full version classic games which appear on the PC Gamer CD are not for redistribution or resale. The only reason PC Gamer is permitted to distribute them on their July CD is because they have agreements with the publishers and developers of those games to do so and that does not make the games freeware nor does it permit anyone to distribute them. In short, it is a "Special limited time offer, not for redistribution or resale".
The license agreement for the PC Gamer CD explains the legal terms, there may also be additional license agreements with each game, be sure to check for those too (As some games on the disc may have been released as freeware by their publisher/developer, though most of them haven't been).

Even though these games aren't freeware, I'd say that getting this issue of PC Gamer with the CD is a great deal. $7.99 US isn't bad for 12 full version games (Plus 5 *more* full games in the 'Goodies' folder - Betrayal at Krondor, Zork I-III and Red Baron). That's 17 full version classic games plus a magazine. If you divided the cost ($7.99) by the amount of full version free games on the CD (17), it would cost you 47 cents per game! (And that's not even factoring in the price of the magazine!) It's not free, but it's darn close!

Those last five (Zork I-III, Betrayal and Red Baron) are all available for free, though. You can download them straight from the publishers.
