God, ROTT has fantastic music
Rott has fantastic music. I even MP3-ised some of the level songs so I could put them on CD's and listen to them whenever. They're that good. I think "Workday" would be great at clubs, if it had major bass. And "Deadly" is a holiday classic.

Whoever did Rott's music is very talented. If a CD of ROTT's songs, redone with instruments was made, I'd buy it for upwards 40 dollars.

Damm straight. Lee jackson did a great job with the Rott music (it sounds perfect on my AWE 64). Some of the best songs are:
Havana Smooth Cool Adagio For Strings
Suck This I Choose the Stairs Oww.
There are a lot more too. Lee Jackson does the best music (IMHO) in the industry. Hell, even "Dark Matter" (which didn't make DN3d) was a great song. He should mp3-ize his ROTT work. I think he did a better job on Rott than Prince did on Doom.

Lee Jackson certainly does achieve great things. This is a great post. ROTT, along with Lee's other accomplishments, are amazing. I agree that ROTT has much better tunes than DOOM. How many games have there been where you can run around killing a bunch of crazy cult members while to an array of jazzy, uplifting tunes? I've never met its equal.

Re: God, ROTT has fantastic music
well, I guess I shall enjoy preaching to the choir once more
I do believe Lee jackson is tha man when it comes to game music, as his contribution to ROTT is the best gaming music I have ever heard, I play the ROTT midi files from time to time and they sound great, but while playing the game, I like to push the music volume up in order to enjoy every second of it. It combines fast paced music to add to the action, with marvelous tunes and very interesting musical movements. I sometimes analyse the ROTT tunes and Lee never cease to amaze me.
Other than that, Bobby Prince did an excellent job on his ROTT tracks, which adds to the Wolf3d music which is very artistic, and IMO can be listened to as a musical piece.

Re: God, ROTT has fantastic music
Ya know, I believe all the tracks are in the goodies/midi folder on the ROTT CD as well .

Funny, I was just thinking about ROTT's great music this morning. On the way to school, I was listening to the radio, and they put on, as a short interlude, the Christmas tune "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". I instantly recognized the melody (I distinctly remembered a cool percussion beat), but it took me a few minutes to place it--deadly.mid from ROTT. And a very good rendition it is too.

Among the others I like include:
Runnin' Down the Fast Way
Owww
Run Like Smeg
Cccool
I Choose the Stairs

Just off the top of my head. I know there are others.

One of these days, I plan to prepare and burn an audio CD of ROTT's tunes (for peronal use only, of course).

To answer the Prince question, he did the music Rise, Here Boy... I think he did Gazz and he did one more. And here are names of all the songs:
Gazz!!
Here Boy
Rise
Chant
Adagio for Strings and Organ
Going Down the Fast Way (fastway.mid)
Suck This
CCcool
Hellero
Apogee's Fanfare
Mist Ache
Mmmenu (just a couple of bars from Cccool)
Owww!!!!
Work Day
You Suck
Where Izit?
Whatz Next
Victory
Task Force
I Choose the Stairs
Boss Blow
Havana Smooth (My favorite)
Excalibur
EvinRude
Going Up (elevator music)
God rest ye deadly gentlemen
How'd I do?
Funeral of Queen Mary
Kiss Off
Spray
Smoke and Mirrors
Shards
The Fish Polla
Suck This
Run Like Smeg (pure sweetness)

Well, that's all I think. Some great pieces of work. I must agree ROTT had the best soundtrack in a game ever and I bet if more people would have made Rott, the music would have been on Cd (which would be a great idea).

(Lee, I hope you realize how good your ROTT music is... and everything else you've done)

Re: God, ROTT has fantastic music
Lee, I think what we'd all like is to have access to (whether via your web site or via CD to order) is more or less what DOOM fans have at doomworld. We'd love to hear what today's synthesizer's could provide for us in the way of the ROTT soundtrack. I know the technology is incredible now. Even the midi on my new Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card sounds incredible.

Also, I've always thought that the ROTT songs fully orchestrated would sound fantastic, especially in a jazz band situation.

And Joe, I didn't see anything in the FAQ about which songs Robert Prince wrote. I think I may have seen it somewhere before, however. I was just curious, tis all.

Once again, thanks for the greatest PC game music ever to hit the scene, Lee.

That's because I used a Gravis Ultrasound as my soundcard when I wrote the songs. They began their life on that card. I had to tweak them when I heard Tom play them on his Roland SCC-1, of course, but they were still full of that yummy Gravis flavor.

If I ever did a recording, I'd probably start by setting up a legacy machine with a GUS in it, sync that machine to other MIDI devices, then play the songs through everything and mix it down into something new. 'Twould be an interesting experiment at least.

Suck This
Cccool
Going Down the Fast Way
Havana Smooth
I choose the Stairs
Adagio for Strings
Run like Smeg

And what did I hear about Jazz band? Run like smeg would work great in a guintet (drums, piano, bass, Tenor Sax and Trombone). Anyway, I actually have a Sound Blaster Live and a Sound Blaster AWE 64 and to tell you the truth, more songs sound a lot better on the 64 than the newer Live!. I guess that tells you where our technology in midi has gotten us today.....

Re: God, ROTT has fantastic music
I understand where you're coming from in regards to the Soundblaster Live! After hearing the midi and the fact that the card works poorly with games like ROTT (slows down performance), I began buying Turtle Beach sound cards. The new Santa Cruz has the best midi I've ever heard on a commercial sound card. The TB Montego II is excellent also. Turtle Beach takes their midi very seriously, and it pays off. Not sure what Soundblaster knew they were doing.

Re: God, ROTT has fantastic music
I don't want to turn this forum into a discussion about sound cards, but I do want to mention that if anyone would take the route to buy Turtle Beach's excellent sound cards, consider the following:

If you get the Montego II, you will have General MIDI music for DOS games (sounds great!), but the card isn't very compatible w/WIN2000 on systems with a 133MHz bus or faster. If you're the 9x/Me user, get it. Get the Santa Cruz, on the other hand, if you want a sound card that works in 9x/Me/2000 on any bus speed. I don't believe general MIDI for DOS games is supported here, but all DOS games that works with Windows at least have SB music/sound effects. Can't say that about the SB Live!. . .

No, Shards just wound up short. I wanted to do a lot more with it, but I kept running into polyphony limitations of the Roland SCC-1 card (instruments dropping out - a bad thing with repeated chords). It was also a bit "in your face," and it wasn't one of the rest of the team's favorite tunes. Because of this, I didn't spend as much time on it as I wanted to.

BTW, the title "Shards" is another one of my puns. It's a take on the name of the composer whose style I emulated - Philip Glass. "Shards of Glass" was going to be the title originally, but that got cut back to just "Shards."

Hey, this just in... I came upon some interesting things about "Havana Smooth" from the Apogee FAQ. It says that it's mostly made from things Lee has heard from the Drum Bugle corps. That's not the most striking part of it, but that the fact Joe Siegler actual hates this song. I loved it. It was a great latin song which was IMHO, the best song on Rott. Hey Joe, what don't you like about it?

Do yourself a favour and don't look Glass work, that man is a boring composer and if I hear another of his choirs, I'm going to commit murder.
If you want pointers on some Minimalist composers, I'd be glad to supply you with those, just not Glass, take my word on it, he's horrible.

Edit: following the discuss that takes place later, I take the above back, I still don't like Glass, but you are welcomed to listen to his work and make your own opinion. you may want to check http://www.philipglass.com/ for more info about the composer.
