Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Unless you are KO Gilligan posting about Bombshell. Perhaps it is because the Bombshell trailer really is bad enough for every other gamer in the world, except me, to know it'll suck. Still... it's better to be an optimist.

This is my favorite preview of the game. From Caffeine Freak @ Doomworld:

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
From the sounds of it, it's going to be pretty awesome.
Has there been any shaky cam footage uploaded yet, surely someone had their mobile set to record during the event.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Some more interesting news is that apparently the principal graphics engineer from Crytek, Tiago Sousa, has left Crytek to go work at id software and help with Doom 4 and id Tech 6.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Hey! I read Gameinformer article and the links provided by Echo Black, and it sound really good. The only thing I didn't like the sound of was that "there's certainly potential here for exploration, but both areas we saw were linear and there didn't appear to be much room for veering off of the beaten path."
My guess, they had to show the action to keep everyone pumped, but I hope they manage to keep some secret areas here and there. The satisfaction of getting more arsenal and goodies for doing something outside the path is always good in Doom, Doom 2 and Doom 3. But, I won't make a great deal about it, cause it's just one point, and the rest of it sounds pretty good to me.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I believe they surely will have secrets and a good amount of replay value, although these days, there are only a few games that are worth another go when it comes to playing through the campaign.

Personal status update: Now I'm a tiny bit excited.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
One question... is a true idTech6 engine or just an update to 5? I remember a while ago Carmack as saying the technology for 6 wasn't around yet.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
Everything I've read/heard does make it almost scream Doom II.
A guy my wife went to college with is a game journalist, and while he's a bit of a douche, he did attend QuakeCon and said the footage not only looked amazing, the gameplay and speed of the combat was beyond excellent. I can understand Bethesda not wanting to publicly show it. As it's not the first time QuakeCon attendees got secret showings (though, nothing this big before)... but the common word from people I've talked to is that the footage looked beyond good enough to show. A few people have told me that it looked better then gameplay trailers for other games that are coming out in the near future. I'm hoping this means that since Bethesda are not wanting to start talking about it more openly until next year, that it means they are going to try for a more truncated announcement/release cycle. I know some people inside Bethesda stated they made mistakes by announcing Wolf: TNO and The Evil Within too soon. Only to have to delay the titles and make people wait. ---------- Post added at 11:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:48 PM ---------- Quote:
The engine most likely follows all of id's previous engines in being a heavily updated/reworked version of the previous tech. As they are still holding a consistent 60fps and instant control response as high priority. I'm having a hard time finding it, but there was an interview stating the teaser trailer was real time.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
The question is, are the changes going to be for the better, or for the worse? We all know how developers love to consolify games these days.

It's also been said that idTech6 doesn't use traditional polygons to build the models. It works by raycasting the geometry represented by voxels (instead of triangles) allowing a much higher level of detail on models and the environment.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I wish that was true (I miss the id that pushed hardware and made people upgrade their PCs), but I'm fairly sure it won't be the case. That was a Carmack quote from 3 years ago and back then the plan was to make a PC-focused Doom 4 and scale down to consoles. I'm fairly sure it will use traditional polygons, especially if they want to make a fast game with multiple enemies onscreen. It could use raycasting in some form (e.g. for calculating specular highlights, instead of cheating it with a specular map) and voxels for certain specific terrain, I suppose. But I'm betting on it being a relatively "sober" engine, like a fork of id tech 5. Megatextures are probably out.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
I wouldn't be surprised if megatextures are still in. But refined and updated.

Re: Doom 4 Thread Part 2
A more advanced form of 'mega texturing', Partially Resident Textures, is apparently going to be in Doom. But that was when Carmack still used to work for Bethesda, I guess.
