What do you mean by ".map" exporter? Are you talking about creating your map in 3DSmax and then importing it into Prey? You don't really need to import it, just save your models as .ase or .lwo if you have an .ase to .lwo converter. The maya exporter in the doom 3 sdk is for converting animated characters into MD5 files, nothing to do with maps.

well, i wanted the exporter for like a prefab, im used to fear so i dont know if prey has this, but in fear you could export the .max file into world00c file, which can be imported into a map. That is what im kinda lookin for. But for lightwave models, wouldnt that only be for character and weapon models?

Well models are used as level geometry as well. So if you are making a room you can build it in max and export all the objects as ase then just build the walls in the editor using brushes then add in your models. Pretty much everything thats not square or simple curves are models in the doom engine.

Here is a tutorial on how to get models from max to the doom engine.

i would like to find a Map exporter for 3DS too. my map has a design that'll bue much harder to do in Preditor then in Max.

something that'll convert all objects into brushs but ignores Concave to prevent problems. it's not that hard to split a model into blocks, so i don't intend on a plugin to do it for me.

also i think Tman is talking about brushs, not static models. very different thing.

So you want an exporter that takes your models and turns them into brushes for use in the game?

The only use I can think of for something like this is so you could texture the brushes like you normally would if you created the brushes in the editor... but you do realize you can texture in Max and export it all finished right?

Just unzip all the textures from the pak's, create your model and texture it within Max using the games textures. Then import into the editor (as a model) and your done.

Re: 3dsmax 8 plugin?
the reason why i need is because my map is tri symmetrical in every direction. if it were a simple mirror or quad, i could use Prediter's own features.

plus Max has Array, Relax, Smooth and so on. i could work on a curved service as a whole before seperating it. it would just work better for the unified style i'm aiming for.

but please, enough about my reasons or Tman's. maybe we don't see the golden shininess of the editor but i think he started this thread just to ask about a converter.

Re: 3dsmax 8 plugin?
There are a lot of sections in the actual game where they did this, and it's not really that hard.

Create whatever you want in 3ds max, then export it as an ASE. Put the ASE file somewhere in the prey\base\models\mapobjects folder. You'll probably want to create your own folder in there. In Preditor you can then import what you've made by right-clicking in the main grid view and select New Model... from the top of the menu. Select your model and it'll appear in the map. Your map objects will still be treated as entities, so you'll have to create a few brushes around them so they're not just floating in the void, otherwise it won't bsp.

If you'd like to get the correct scale in 3ds, you can create something in Preditor and export it as an ASE to load into 3ds. Select what you want to export, then in the Selection menu choose Export > To ASE.

And like Hakuryu said, you'll have to unzip all the textures to use in 3ds. They're in pak004.pk4.

Guys, he wants to make brushes in Max, and export them as a map file, that's neither static models nor details. He's making the BSP part of the map in Max!

And based on the responses here and other places, such a thing doesn't really exist. The people in this thread have been focused on trying to ensure that you can export in some fashion. If a bsp translator is necessary then the simple answer is no, one does not exist. It would be a neat thing to have though.

The only real options *is* to export as models, that's why it's being mentioned so much.

The closest thing to being able to actually create a 'map' file in Max would be to use GMax and the Tempest plugin. However, even that was a little flakey and it didn't really make *.maps but allowed you to 'compile' GMax/Tempest files straight out to BSP (mesh surfaces were 'flagged' as brushwork' and treated accordingly). I've only ever seen two maps made this way and they were rather blocky affairs.

try this link, this page has some awsome vid tuts, one of them involves creating caves in max and exporting it into doom3, as the engine and editor are pretty much identical, it should work for prey!!!!!!!!!!

Yea i forgot to reply to this but what u do in Max is export the map or model as an ASE and add textures and then pack it up in the pk4.

Yes, you can export .MAP files from 3ds Max using http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/game-level-builder
It works for all 3ds Max versions from v3 to 3ds Max 2008.
