Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
I was really disappointed reading the PCGamer article about Prey. As I mentioned in one of the other Prey threads, I found there were far too many spoilers about the game. Who ever was speaking about the game was way too cocky about the 'emotional involvment' and 'shedding tears' storyline. I was also very upset to learn about the floating jumbo jet and the maniacal blond girls. These are all things that I (and I think others too) would prefer to have been surprised by within the context of playing the game. I know that many people will read this complaint and say that I shouldn't have read the article if I didn't want to find out this stuff. But, as a long-time fan of 3DR, I've come to expect them to not be giving away important components of the storyline in preview articles. Look at how tight they've kept the lid on DNF information all these years. They (3DR) has generally taken pride in their ability to maintain Area 51 secrecy and minimize hype over the last few years. How could anyone remotely interested in 3DR and Prey not read that article?! It's the first one in years that describes a 3DR game that is actually under development.
This is all part of a trend that I have been noticing the last couple years. You can find out all sorts of information (way too much!) about many games on websites and in articles well before the game is available to play. It often takes the suspense out of many portions of these games. In response to the release of too much information (IMO), I've decided to write the ultimate spoiler. I think I've pieced together the main plot twist of Prey (far too easily from the hints given) and would like to share it with you... Read on only if you don't like surprises... <table><tr><th><font size="-1">Spoiler below:</font></th></tr><tr><td class="spoiler"> Obviously, as mentioned in the article, Tommy is aboard an alien ship trying to save his girlfriend. He likely meets all manner of strange creatures that have been 'collected' by the alien race from other planets/dimensions and probably fights a lot of them.Along the way he likely sees his girl on video screens etc. imploring him to save her. Based upon the comments regarding the love between Tommy and his abducted girlfriend (why did they have to tell us even this?), the fact that they expect us to be very emotionally involved in his attempts to get her back, as well as that we are expected to shed a lot of tears at some point in the game, I can only assume that the girlfriend gets killed. Likely in some gruesome and horrible way and after we (Tommy) have expended enormous energy to rescue her. (This is the part where we are supposed to cry and think the game is over - and that we lost...). But wait! Our friendly spritual guide appears and reminds us that we never actually die (remember the developer comments about not needing save games - you just have to kill some spirit beasts to be revived) and all we have to do is enter the spirit world (possibly by killing ourself in the process) where we can perform some heroic feats defeating some horrific spiritual beasties, thereby resurrecting both our girlfriend and ourselves, and saving the world from alien invasion after we become some sort of 'Neo' figure - full of supernatural power. </td></tr></table> You heard it here first!! Whadd'ya think? Comments... |

Re: Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
thats true... but you have to remember that in order to be "surprised" you must first buy the game... And in order to buy the game you have to be interested in it.
And thats what its all about. If you dont know anything about the game or its cool features you are much less likely to buy it.

Re: Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
It's features have nothing to do with storyline.
PCGamer should have put *spoiler warning* before their preview; then that way it would those who just wanna see the pics can, without reading too much and getting the PLOT spoiled. Ofcourse, there are some of us that don't care about the story, and just wanna play a fun game.

Re: Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
DiscoDave have can you know that the preview contains any spoilers ?
We don't know about those things wich weren't mentioned in the article. Was the DNF trailer from E3 2001 a spoiler of that version of DNF ? I don't consider it to be that, we get to know practicly nothing about that version of DNF after watching the trailer. The same can be said about the Prey preview. I migth thing the game has been spoiled but you have no way of noing yet since the game isn't out yet. I am pretty sure that George, Scott and the guys over at Human Head haven't shown PC Gamer anything they didn't want to be public knowledge. Or if they have showen something like that they have ordered them not to wirte about it This is what 3DR and Human Head wan't the pubic to know at this time. I am 100% certain that this isn't too much information, 3D Realms don't wan't to spoil their games, the suprise factor is very important to them. They have said so many times. |

Re: Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
I'm happy I didn't read the review carefully, there should be something about a ship, something about a blonde girl that's disgusting, and I don't know how spirit walking works

Re: Storyline Spoilers!! I hate them...
Yes, I really don't see his point. You read the preview to obtain information about the game, right? So why are you complaining that they've outlined the main premise of the game?
They haven't talked about what happens in the plot, about any of the back story behind the enemies. They've only mentioned one weapon, and they haven't gone into any detail about the gameplay scenarios themselves. One 'scripted sequence' is mentioned, when the DNF E3 video contains tens of them. What they've given you is what you'd expect to read on the back of the box.
