Post Duke Nukem Trilogy: Critical Mass IGN Preview
Ign.com has placed a small preview on the first Duke Nukem game in the upcoming portable trilogy on their website. A demo of Critical Mass was shown to IGN on both DS and PSP platforms with a couple of small levels shown.

IGN had noted that the game looked to be varying in the alpha to pre-alpha stage and with the first game set for a US summer 2009 release, this could be a worrying sign. It was noted that most of the levels were more of a mock up than a final build and many of the weapons were not final models.

There were plenty of notable information contained in the small preview, including what multi-player components will be enabled on each platform and what type of control scheme and view each version will be taking. It is certainly worth a look.

Check it out here: http://au.psp.ign.com/articles/966/966065p1.html

Something tells me that this is going to be delayed, contrary to the quote at the end of the article.....

I hope they spend enough time on it and make it all that it can possibly be!

After reading the website i just linked, it appears to be more than just an official website, they want fans to join auditions to be the next icon for promotional purposes

Sounds wacky, wonder how that will end up like

Maybe. I'm only stating what i know about Sony's PSP plans and i wouldn't be surprised if Sony wanted them to change their plans and make some episodic Duke series - especially if the first one becomes a hit. Of course they could use the downloadable content for other reasons, like putting additional levels/missions. So far the design of the Duke games allow for such disconnected missions and i believe a Duke game would be a very good franchise for episodic gameplay.

Lets not forget that the industry's "next big thing" is supposed to be micropayments and Sony would want their share of it.

So let me get this straight.....dukeisback.com holds the purpose of recruiting a Duke Nukem actor to promote the trilogy??

Even though the site doesn't mention the trilogy, there are 10 environment screenshots from the PSP version shown on it.

And it also displays what looks to be a piece of concept art(also from the PSP), with small text over it that says "videos to come". I assume this is for the eventual trailer and gameplay vids?

I can't say anything. Critical Mass is not a 3DR Project. That has to come from Apogee LLC.

AFAIK, dukeisback.com is about finding a guy to play Duke at trade shows. It's not a game site, no.

I hope there's some good inspecting in terms of quality assurance... don't rape duke's reputation please... Graphically I'm not used to seeying PSP and DS screens, they look awfull from my perspective... (used to cutting edge gfx, my fault probably...)

EDIT: VERY BAD NEWS!

This is because the PSP version is rated Mature while the DS version is rated Teen, in order to expand the Duke Nukem audience to young kids who may not be familiar with Duke Nukem 3D. Consequently, only the PSP version is going to have the rampaging and mildly obscene Duke Nukemness that you hunger for (which makes me wonder to what extent the DS version is going to catch on, but that’s a separate issue)

Is this the worst design choise in history!? lets destroy the whole logic and character behind Duke...

I find it a tiny bit ironic that your avatar is from another Duke game that if released today would be rated Teen as well .

THAT doesn't surprise me a bit: the DS always had the reputation of a kiddy console. Moreover, the DS is a NINTENDO console, and you know what Nintendo is like.

I was just about to point that out.

And even a Teen rating for Duke I and II would be stretching it. I'd say E10+ content, ftw.

Here's a new video interview from GDC, it contains gameplay footage......

http://gdc.gamespot.com/video/620689...interview?hd=1

Anyone found any other videos floating around??

Edit: Okay, I actually watched the movie and....well....let's just say that if the build of the PSP version on display is the most up to date(which I can only assume it is), then I personally don't see any way hell the game will be ready for its intended release date, September.

Does anyone share this opinion?

And tbh, I actually got more excited by hearing Terry Nagy talk about and describe the game than by the actual gameplay footage itself- which is pretty sad.

Wasn't it said back when the E3 'trailer' was released that the next Duke game released would be THE Duke game, and not this?

The game does look VERY early staged, but then again thats what was said in the interview. They don't even have the gameplay done most of the way yet.

Keeping an eye on this, as well as hope.

They seem to have the core gameplay tacked down (minus some tweaks like the Apogee rep said), it's just the animations and effects that need more work.

No, really, what is Nintendo like? Judging how you said that makes me think you know something I don't.

Keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't police what goes on the system. It was likely a developer decision to keep it as such. You'll still probably get the same Duke experience on that system.

You can get it on the PSP, or double-dip. It's all up to you.

I have to agree that the level design is a bit like DNF(quake version) especially this shot:

So i read the article and the PSP version is a strickly 3rd person affair and the the DS version is a side scroller...sooooooooooo...where the hell does the above screen shot fit in?

I'm expecting a remake on build by someone...
