Bio source
Since Biomenace is discontinued, can you guys release the source to the people who's PC's they work on? It works fine on mine.

Re: Bio source
That would be a great idea, but every other attempt to persuade 3DR to release past source code has always ended up in "ain't gonna happen". Hope we can grab their attention this time

I think Bio Menace wasn't that well written anyway, because for me it used to crash frequently under DR-DOS 7 even on a well-configured system. It usually only works properly under MS-DOS 6.22 (or possibly 7.0).

Re: Bio source
I just got an idea a little while ago about possibly porting it to more up-to-date OSes, like Windoze and Linux (Or you could just write a new DOS version that is Windoze-friendly, and uses proper programming techniques). Perhaps that could be one reason why 3DR should release it.

Well, maybe not BioMenace alone, but other good titles of the past that have been unfortunately broken by ignorant hardware manufacturers and Windoze's poor DOS compatibility should be rewritten to give them a new lease of life in today's rapidly changing computing world.

I knew you were going to say that, but let's just look at this from a hypothetical view...

Well, actually I'm pretty sure id is cool with the Keen source being released. That's what John Romero said on ICQ.

There is a bigger problem with Bio's source, since it is based on Id's Keen4 engine, 3dR would have to get Id's approval to that as well, if they ever want to release the code, which I doubt they would, knowing the company policy on those matters.

Just out of curiousity, why would they not want to release the source code. They have no real use for it so what is the big fuss over keeping with them, i can't understand. Joe, since you're in the gaming business maybe you could explain this to me.

Re: Bio source
If they would just give me the source of any of their old games, I'd gladly convert it to Windows and DirectX (or OpenGL, for that matter.) Hell, I'd probably do it for free. Those games are classics!

Re: Bio source
11 years later... is the Biomenace source still not available for release? (The game has been freeware'd, and other games have had their source codes relased... maybe that changes something?)

If the answer is still no, is the source for any of the following Dreams engine games available:

Rescue Rover 2
Dangerous Dave 3/4
Shadow Knights and Dave 2?

Has anyone asked John Romero recently? Maybe he has found the code. Last I heard he and John Carmack were prepared to release the Commander Keen source code but they couldn't find it, so perhaps if Jim Norwood (Bio Menace programmer) could be tracked down he might still have a copy of the version he used for Bio Menace?

IIRC Jim saved the day for the SW source release, so it's worth trying.

Re: Bio source
AFAIK, this is the status of things:

John Romero came by the Keen IRC a few months back and mentioned that he had a Keen VGA parallax scrolling demo (presumably ModeX) that was going to be used for TUIT, and that he might also release some old game archive creation tools.

Tom Hall has stated on his blog that he was going to get some old stuff from Syquest Tape storage, but that was about a year ago and I don't know what happened to that. I messaged him on youtube the other day about it. We'll see how long that takes...

I haven't tried to contact Jim Norwood. He has a LinkedIn profile, but I have yet to find an email address.

I think Tom Hall's stroke definitely altered some of his summer plans last year. I remember that he mentioned an intention to release a new PC version of Hyperspace Delivery Boy! as well.
