so I have been thinking
and I love D3d... still play it like many people do here...

When I heard id was coming out with ddom 3 i was hella excited. doom is another one of my favorites. I played the first level and shut the game off.. it was not the doom that i knew and loved.

so my thing is, will D4e still have the things from duke 3d that we know and love, or like doom 3 will it just start all over and copy ever other game out ther.

It depends what you mean by that. Doom 3 has many of the things you knew and loved from Doom (to pre-empt Cerberus' comments ), just in a different form.

All we can say is that DNF will have many of Duke 3D's gameplay elements - we don't know how they'll be arranged or how modern the gameplay will be. Confirmed are: Octobrain, Pipe Bombs, Shrinker, Freezer, Duke's Mighty Foot, some old inventory items. Probably returning are the Pigcops (George used them in a gameplay example, and there's some concept art for them). George has hinted that the Battlelord may be in.

Sadly new things are never better. I'll never forget the ambient sounds in Doom I & II. I'll never forget the sounds of the doors, guns, enemys and MIDI tracks. That was neraly a decade ago.

I purchased DOOM 3 and played it I think once, to the end. And I only remember the intros and the first map.

Same for a lot of games. Such as the original MGS, RE2 and SH1. Most likely memory of those games is so great, because I liked them so much that I played one of them all the way through once everyday.

You have to remember that games have become so large and complex that we don't run back and forth through the same areas enough for the layout and order to be stamped into our brains.

Hopefully it will still have that duke feeling to it, where you are the man and you still kick arse with awesome weapons, and balanced gameplay. The look and feel of the 2001 e3 video, I believe, showed the next step of what the game should be like. It was just awesome and to me it looked like 3DR would continue the tradition and make DNF the same Duke we all know and loved.

hehe, exactly. Those where boring levels though. IMO the only game that actually pulled that of properly was AvP2 and then the marine part. Those first 2 levels where some of the scariest I have ever played.

thats because people are just graphic and technology hungry these days and forget about the simple thing could 'fun' and excellent 'gameplay' that make you enjoy and remember a game not look at it and think yeh that looks good and just forgeting it 2 days later playing another new good looking game with no fun or gameplay, just a never ending cycle with better technology and no real fun and gameplay and things to look back at it on as a classic and fun game to play for years.

I still have to play that game, and now you have spoiled it by saying nothing happens in the first few levels

You know, everyone goes on and on about how 'scary' AvP 1and 2 were. WTF? I thought it was a good game, yes, but scary? Shits no. And I don't mean that as in "Anyone who was sscared of that was *****!", I mean it like I thought it was more of an action game.

In fact, I don't remember jumping once during the whole game.

As for Doom 3, well, buddy, are oyu telling me that all you wanted was a story that was three paragraphs long, virtually the same level over and over again, the only other place you go is hell, and most of that is spent inside, and, furthermore, a game where you couldn't jump, interact with anythign except for barrels, and all you do is shoot shoot shoot? Cause' thats what it sounds like.

If that's really all you wanted, there is a mod out now, that completely recreates the first episode of DooM 1. I suggewst you load Doom 3 back on and download that mod.

As for hoping that Duke will retain his flavor......HELLO! This is 3DRealms, we're talking about here. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Duke will be a-ok!

Sorry. , Play it anyway, it's worth it. (the marine part that is, the rest is kinda standard stuff imo. )

You are correct, but nowadays people are shouting for more gameplay, graphics is still important but good gameplay and immersion is considered to be the most important thing nowadays. And since a lot of developers (NOT EA ) are capable of delivering that, we have nothing to worry about.

Scary is not just about jumping up out of your chair. Scary is also about an atmosphere where your heart rises sky high, you are almost afraid to move on because something might be there and see things in the shadows that are not there. The marine part of AvP 2 did that really good. Mostly because of the movement detector and the aliens which could remain sitting absolutely still or the predators that could be invisible. Really scary stuff IMO.

(The alien and predator part where kinda standard yes. )

I didn't think it was as scary as the movies... But it SURE had the same feel as them... Which is why i love it... I didn't jump from my seat either during gameplay...

It's hard to explain... A scary atmosphere, which isn't scary...

well, the demo felt a bit sinister, the long outside corridors with a grey sky, and the wind gowling.
