the old tribes

I have run into a dead end on 'the old tribes' level. dont know how to post a screen shot so here goes: I find myself trapped in a spherical chasm. there are 4 landing platforms around the perimiter, half way up, each carrying blue lightning from the base of the chasm to the ceiling. one of these carriers is on the blink. The other three are just fine. I can travel between them on the shuttle craft and get the shields all down and open the fronts. the shields inside disapear if you shoot them but this still doesn't stop the fan in the cieling. It looks like i need to get through this fan to move on. any clues? ta.
