I heard that The Duke Nukem Forever we all know and love was gonna be called
"Duke Nukem 4".

Where did the screenshots come from? The engine looks alot like a cross between the one used on DN2 and the build engine.

I don't want to say who specifically as she or he would probably would like to remain unnamed to avoid a barrage of e-mails.

They were given to me for the wiki project with approval by 3D Realms. That's the best answer I can really give.

I didnt know that the original dnf was going to be a side scroller.
SO glad thet never came to fruition.
Although, I didnt mind DN MP at all, and wouldnt mind if that dnf was realeased under a new name.

There are probably better engines available, but how hard would it be to do this on the Build Engine?
I have never looked at the source code and I am not an expert coder, so I just don't know.
The camera can be moved to rails and the path depth limited... I don't know anything about Duke Nukem Vector dimensions really. This doesn't seem like a monumental task when looking at things like Duke Theft Auto.

Just curious.

It was never officially announced or even really made public that it existed until several years later when the current incarnation of Duke Nukem Forever was in production its existence was made known.

Interesting. I guess I never saw that site back then... I didn't really get heavy into forum reading and site monitoring until a few months after Duke 3D... as I was expecting a sequel pretty quickly. I got the WizardWorks titles and played them a lot, then was knee deep in my Quake Server after that... so I missed this all together.

I'm surprised nobody has even mentioned yet that the engine was sold to another company to create Alien Rampage. The game is freeware now.

I didn't know Alien Rampage used the same engine. Where did you read that?

Interesting... I can't verify this. If this is the case, it wasn't the Build Engine then.

I still wonder if the Build engine could be used to make a Manhattan Project type game however.

I don't think that's correct. The Apogee FAQ that was included in the Duke3D CD already mentioned Ravager, while the DNF sidescroller was mentioned on Usenet for the first time, as "currently in development" on September 7, 1996 (=AFTER Duke3D was released).

I'll do some digging on this as I'm the one who wrote that wiki page. You are correct in that Ravager was around back in '95 and that DNF was mentions in '96 but from what I've been told DNF eventually became Ravager. Chances are these projects were merged which is why Ravager (Alien Rampage) shares similarities to what DNF would have been.

It was confirmed by 3D Realms though that DNF became Ravager, I just don't know all the little details in-between.
