Good news for Scyth: I've joined distributed.net, so now my computer is calculating that while I'm using it and SETI when I'm not using it, for maximum idle cycle efficiency. I'll join the Dopefish team as soon as I get a password.

Okay, I've joined the team. The change should show up tomorrow. I'm only averaging 25 KKeys/sec, but still, every little bit counts!

OK, I'm now at 41 KKeys/sec thanks to running this on my dad's work machine...it's super easy to have distributed and SETI coexist, you just set distributed to pause whenever 'setihome.scr' is active. Team Dopefish is getting fairly pathetic...you people on the SETI team (read: Stingray) should join up!

Okay, I've given up on SETI completely. The new version is just so slow on my computer that it's taking me months to finish a single data unit. At least with distributed, I can actually accomplish something. I'll look into other stuff like Entropia and GOLEM@home...
In the meantime, it's back to running the good ol' Dopefish screen saver! ![]() [This message has been edited by Justin (edited 02-08-2001).] |

Seems like Scyth is on vacation or something...he's stopped turning in work units. The Dopefish Team's going down in the stats...
Incidentally, is *anyone* here except me? [echoes "me...me...me..."] |

It may actually be smarter to use the Blank Screen screen saver--that way if you leave a browser window open with some animated GIFs or something, it will know not to waste CPU animating them, as the blank screen is covering it up. Just a thought, I haven't tested this or anything.
My PC's set up to scan for viruses during the screen saver, so d.net doesn't get much time then. Fortunately the PC is in almost continual use. ![]() |

I don't do any of that - mine just turns the power to the monitor off, in addition to running SETI.

I just found a different reason to not use APM/ACPI monitor power off: When I do that with my current display driver (based on 650 Detonator driver), my Annihilator 2 (GeForce 2 GTS 32 MB) clock and memory speeds get dropped from 200 MHz / 332 MHz to 100 MHz / 196 MHz.
![]() Hopefully the next driver won't do that, or better yet, hopefully Creative will update their FastTrax driver kit. FastTrax's Display Director can under/overclock both the clock and memory speeds, so I wouldn't have to reboot even if the driver continues to suffer from that problem. |
