First Max Payne gameplay movie ever!!
Hey all, feast your eyes on the very first gameplay trailer of MP ever (i think)! This clip was included in the CD that came along with Jan 1998 PCZone issue, which I had stumbled upon. Lemme give a brief history of the scene back then, the cover game and demo on the PCZ issue was Blood II : The Chosen (a fps on a quake engine i think), there were demos for heretic 2, Anno 1602, etc. It was quite a stone age back then compared to this day...anyways, I was so excited when I first watched the trailer 5 years ago that I used to watch it again and again everyday, perplexed by its incredible graphics (well for that time anyway), and a new way of story telling. I was especially impressed by the lasersight from the handgun and Max limping.

THE FILE SIZE IS JUST UNDER 30MB, ZIPPED. That means, if your on dial up, tough luck
btw, Its in AVI format.

http://www.gameroom.com/crim/Maxpayne.zip

I have to admit, if it werent for the bundling of that gameplay demo in that PCZ issue, I wouldnt had been a fan of MP at all. THANKS FOR SUCH A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE, REMEDY!

I guess it's from the version of the game which still had painskins and giant mutated badguys?

Oh and that cool dude with cigarette.

If it is so indeed then cool, because I only have low-res version of that trailer.

Nope, it ran on the Lithtech engine and was choppy as hell even on "top-of-the-line" computers back then

Skaven once said that Valkyr was originally supposed to mutate people, but the idea was later scrapped because it was already done in Sin.

Interesting. I'm kinda glad they dumped that element---in the video alone it felt somewhat out of place.

Cool video. Ironic that they show the guy with the cigarrette. There's some commented out FSM messages for the cigarette skin_item which did the smoke.

In a way this Max Payne looks cooler than the version which was released (bulletwounds, biker guy etc.) but way more ugly and it also seems to be that they rebuilt the whole game since none of those levels, models and other features in the video was in released MP.

BTW, I suggest you forum people to download this video and NOT DELETE AFTER WATCHING, so we can always have more than a couple of copies. Besides it would be much cooler to have download mirrors, as my site is temporary and I'm using max space of allowed 40MB

Very true, the game engine was re-built once, and Max and the game had changed over the years. Personally the reporters' voices during the beginning of the video sounded cooler than the ones in the real game...

Re: First Max Payne gameplay movie ever!!
I saw this when it came out, I believe it was the E3 video of 98 or so eventually, but I think I also got it off some covercd. And it was the thing that started my Max Payne interest that re-ignited in early 2000. I think it looked damn cool even then, a bit more arcade'ish, but it had a lot of style. It would have kicked ass in 98 if it was done then, but in the end they did some wise choices. I think that game showed more that most of their people came from the demoscene, some of you will know what I mean. (read, textures)

Re: First Max Payne gameplay movie ever!!
Judging from the graphic scenes (the comic pics, whatever), it looks like the final ones in the NEW MP were just edits of the old one.

For example, when you see Max going down the subway entrance, the one in the final game just zoomed in his face.

And on teh 3rd graphic scene, when Vinnie is lying on the ground -- Beaten by Max -- Max shoots him? I guess they changed it so Vinnie wouldn't die in MP1 (Lucky Mariamus).

I found when Max was turning and shooting with an Ingram at windows, he looks like somebody shooting in a Resident Evil game (They just slide... )

Also, I like the laser sights. Ha! And did anyone spot the TAZER?! (That's what I THINK it is...) That'd be so cool to 'electrocute' people

And behind the gigantic enemy, there's the words "Deep Six" stenciled on the wall. Strange, huh?

I'm assuming the last words when the Remedy logo is shown are from Max Payne.
"You want Payne? I'll give you Payne!"
If it is, it doesn't sound anything like it does now

Re: First Max Payne gameplay movie ever!!
Max' wardrobe had a little change too. In this trailer he has a sort of scarf around his neck till his waist, Italian-style. They changed that scarf into a hawaiian shirt (because a scarf would require its own physics and code perhaps ?). Or maybe it was a shirt with no texture back then...hmm..

Wow... this is interesting. Some things I saw:

-The camera was very different. It was much looser and not as stiff or stuck in the same position behind Max's head.
-It seemed that maybe Bullet time was not player-controlled, and there was no shootdodge move, only the dodge (roll).
-You could walk.
-After firing the sniper rifle, there was a animation where max used the bolt on the gun. (have you noticed how the bolt manualy reloads itself on the actual game? Weird. )

Re: First Max Payne gameplay movie ever!!
This brings back memories.

I first got into Max Payne after watching the 2000 E3 trailer. Watched it on repeat for about 30 minutes straight with my mouth hanging open. Then I downloaded the 98 and 99 E3 trailers.

The game looked quite a bit different back then. I think that I still have some old screenshots on my webspace, if anyone is interested.

I wanted to comment on that loose-camera-thing. What I think is that back in 98, the camera was'nt actually in place..It was just a 'spot in a map', which could be moved anywhere. Hence, you'll notice the different angles we get to see Max in. To make the trailer look more game-like, the developers decided to fly the camera behind Max while he's running down the alley.

Also, you get a first glimpse of Bullet time. Remember, this trailer was in the Jan 98 issue. The first matrix was released on April 2nd 1999. So, if anyone thought Matrix was the first to come up with the concept of bullet time, think again :P

If they think so they haven't been listening. It did get influenced by the Matrix, but the slowmo stuff is inspired by HK movies which is well-known.
