Vista 1.5 Atomic Edition troubles
Hello all! I just recently joined these forums for the purpose of joining the community...not exactly to whine to you about my troubles. I just recently ordered Duke Nukem 3D and the Plutonium pack off amazon. I got it yesterday and installed Duke 3D with no problem just the pp was the trouble. So i look on your forums and i hear about DosBox. Great so i try that and install Duke using DosBox then try the plutonium pack and it says the patch has failed! Ok so i try that same proccess a few more times and no progress.

I try to install Duke using the windows installer and then use the plutonium pack in Dos Box. SCORE! I am at version 1.4. Now the trouble is 1.5. I admit I was spoiled by growing up with Windows 95 and up so Dos is throwing me in a deep hole... I opened the installer for ppack1.5 and it says cmd cannot run this in full screen and it stops working. I decide to use DosBox and drag the install.exe from inside the patch over to the DoxBox executable. Ok so thats working... then is says the patch has failed or it could not find the Duke Nukem 3D exe... I install a fresh copy of Duke 3D and i still get the same results... SO my question is am I stuck with 1.4 or am I doing something wrong? Did I miss something? I know I did... Thank you and sorry for robbing your time...

The PPack 1.5 patch was one I created back in the day.

It expected a specific version of Duke3D - it checked all kinds of things, including size, time/date stamp, everything. If yours is not patching, then some parameter is failing - this is usually "incorrect version".

It's for reasons like this that we do not recommend people buy used like that. You can NEVER BE TOTALLY SURE what you're getting. We obviously recommend that you buy the Atomic Edition straight from us - no patching needed.

However, with the PPack 1.5 patch, we also recommend going from 1.3 to 1.5, but DO NOT use the installer on the PPack CD. Install 1.3d, then put the 1.4 CD in the drive, but use the install program from the 1.5 patch.

One other thing to keep in mind is that Vista is a serious problem with our old DOS games. There's no way to get them working on Vista without DOSBox. Not unless you run your video mode at plain old 320x200 VGA, but nobody really wants to do that.

get eDuke32 from www.eduke32.com and get the latest snapshot from http://wiki.eduke32.com/stuff/. eDuke32 is a port that makes Duke Nukem 3D run on Vista nicely, no need for DOSbox.

Also get the "High Resolution Pack" from hrp.duke4.net and get updates for the HRP and the High Quality Music Pack from hrpupdate.duke4.net

IIRC, the 1.4 -> 1.5 patch only affected the original Duke3d.exe and did nothing to the actual GRP file. Meaning that 1.4 and 1.5 are exactly the same when played in any port

If this is the case, could some kind soul please tell me the file size and MD5 for the 1.4 duke3d.exe? I am still experminenting with my game launcher program and for the autodetection code, it'd be nice to be able to distinguish an original PP edition of the game, in case there's anybody still left on the planet who hasn't upgraded to 1.5 yet.
