So, what's DNF Engine?
Search doesn't work, I heard it's a modified version of Unreal Engine 3, Joe?

Super modified Unreal 2 engine. Pretty much does everything Unreal Engine 3 does.

I'm wondering if the engine was ever dubbed with a name internally?

By now... with all the changes 3DRealms have done to it... I think you already typed the name of it.

DNF Engine.

That works.

That's what I've heard, but DavoX himself doubts 100% about it, still asking Joe personally

You know I always hear that 2.5 thing on the net but never with any source for the info. It is actually wrong:

I think we split off around Unreal 2 level tech and wrote our own rendering, and a lot of other things.

It's a modified version of Unreal, about the time of Unreal 2. All the footage apart from the start and end logos was captured via Fraps in game and real-time.

Unreal. I believe we branched off somewhere around the Unreal 2 time when they added static meshes. Since then we've redone the rendering 100% and it's a fully modern engine.
- George Broussard, December 19th, 2007.

There are some quotes with some more info about the engine found here. There is one here as well.

Lol!

It's some kind of Unreal 2 engine but all modified and stuff so it's basically a new engine, let's call it DNF Engine like a guy above said.

DNF Engine:
1.- It's a heavily-modified version of UE2, with huge elements of interactivty with the environment, and capable of displaying bad-ass graphics
OR
2.- A pizza machine...

I hope the 2.5 does not stand for 2.5D!!
On the other hand the nostalgia would be great fun

Yes, I can immagine a game where it had the latest engine, but running sprites for moveable/destroyable/pick-up-able items..That would just be plain funny.

It's Unreal code. Seriously modified. Kind of like the same thing we went through with Rise of the Triad. It was originally Wolfenstein 3D code, but it was modified - A LOT. So much so it could be considered it's own engine. It's kind of hard to answer.
