I never mentioned this in the past because I didn' t matter back then, but member's sig reminded me of it.

I know Duke says " It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum." But shouldn't it be "It's time to kick ass OR chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum"? Meaning their was an option, but since he has no gum then there is only one thing he can do, kick ass.

I'm sure that in the movie army of Darkness he says OR not AND. OR makes more sense anyway.

I've had the same thoughts. This is what I've come up with

You can Drive a Car and use a cell phone. But you would do better doing ONE or the OTHER.

So now Duke is out of Gum, so he can do NOTHING but kick ass

but OR makes more sense

That line originally came from a John Carpenter movie called "They Live". It was a movie about a guy who finds a pair of sunglasses that lets him see aliens that're masquerading around as humans.

Anyway, in one scene, the main character walks into a department store (or was it a bank? I don't remember.) with a loaded shotgun, yelling the line: "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum. ", and then he blows apart a couple aliens that're waiting at a checkout line.

The line didn't make much of sense there either, but I think it was thrown in there intentionally for comedic effect.

I think I know what your talking about and since you mentioned I now remember that scene. Is it that one in which his alienvision glasses are viewed in black and white? Does it star that guy from a cop movie that also stared Eddie Murphy? Does it Co Star that black guy from platoon? I can't remember their real names or character's names in any of those movies.

To me it makes more sense to say " It's time to Kick ass or chew bubble and I'm all out of gum." Not only does it make sense, it's also clever.

To me using AND is just dumb. It might be funny at first, because players think WTF? But other than that it's just pointless babble. It's like saying "It's time to simaltaneously kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum, but that doesn't matter. I just thought I should inform you that I normally chew gum when I do this. I don't have any, but the fact won't stop me from kicking ass, I'm just informing. So if you notice I have no gum while I'm shooting you, you'll know why."

The line "I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum" was ad-libbed by Roddy Piper. According to director John Carpenter, Piper had taken the line from a list of ideas he had for his pro wrestling interviews.

Its easy. Roddy had some bubble gum earlier. But he didnt have anymore. So it pissed him off. So he wants to kick ass and chew some bubble gum, but he doesnt have anymore. So he has to kick even more ass then before because hes pissed.

I always thought it made sense. In fact, OR would ruin it. "It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all outta gum!" meaning: "I would do both, but I have no gum, so I'll just kick ass!". I don't think the Duke should have to be explained. Do you really want him to take 5 minutes of your time to tell you what the joke means and what exactly he is saying? I got it the first time I heard it, and can't see what's with all this.

"I have come here to kick ass or chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum. If you can get some to me before I reload, I might let you live. Not my flavor. You ARE the weakest link! Goodbye."

I think it's easier just to go with the original.

I heard the line from Duke Nukem first, because I played Duke Nukem 3D before I had seen evil dead. I remember when Ash says it in the movie and I thought I heard him say OR. So I remember thinking.. " OR makes so much more sense than AND".

Whatever, They're both funny, One version is clever and the other one is idiotic. Saying it with or is like dropping a bomb while saying it with and is just useless.

ehr.... A : It wasnt in Evil Dead. B : Its already been established that AND makes more sense. Because that means he has come to JUST kick ass. If he said OR a pigcop could throw him some wrigleys, and GAME OVER!
