What does Apogee use? For 2D games
What does Apogee use? To create 2D games like you know Commander Keen and stuff like Duke Nukem II. Do they use VB C++ or their own personal 2d engine? Please could someone tell me this I hope this wasn't a stupid question because I am kind of new to these forums. Thanks!

Oh and ID software made Keen not Apogee, they just published it (well I say just but telling the history of Apogee would involve several game companies and well known personas and just isn't necessary for this thread).

I just want to know what engine they used. Or what software they used to program Keen in. Is that a really hard question?

It depends on which game you're talking about - they were all different.

Re: What does Apogee use? For 2D games
They probably used Borland C++ for DOS or an equivalent compiler. Some of the earlier games (before 1990) were written in Turbo Pascal.
The software engines are usually completely different for each game, as the games utilise the graphics cards in different ways. However there are some games that do seem to borrow the engine from a previous game (as they have similar design). For instance: Secret Agent <- Crystal Caves Blake Stone <- Wolf3D Bio Menace <- Keen 4-6 [This message has been edited by Admiral_Bob (edited 08-12-2000).]

Re: What does Apogee use? For 2D games
Also if you wanted to know what they used to edit the levels, they used TED5. I don't know if they used TED5 for all the games they made but there was alot of games they made that used TED5 for there level editor. Actually you can make your own levels for Bio Menace using TED5. I have actually made a level for Bio Menace (lost it though) and it worked. It was fun actually. Bio Menace is the only side scroller that the levels can be edited. There were some files released that none of the other games had. I don't remember the whole story. Joe told me but it's been a while. I may dig the post up.

...Clik&Play...

AHHHHAHAHHAHAAAHAAHAHAHA! No game company that was trying to make money would use Klik&Play! It's a stupid old game creator for Windows that only non-profit users would use. Me and my 'net buddies formed a non-profit company called 'VaporTech International' that makes (among other things) fan-made Commander Keen games. We use a newer version of Klik&Play called Click & Create, and some use Multimedia Fusion. Commander Keen was written in Borland C++ 3.1 (John told me.) And also: Bio Menace is NOT the only side scroller which can be edited. As many know, Geoff Sims made KMO, a Keen 1 editor.

Re: What does Apogee use? For 2D games
Borland C++ 3.1 was used for both the Keen and Wolf3D games. At the time Borland C++ 3.1 was the dos compiler than people used. I find Borland C++ 3.1 makes loads of mistakes, ones that DJGPP don't, perhaps my programming is cak-handed (probably true).
Anyway, Klik&Play is not all bad, remember, Click&Create came out much later. ------------------ Hell Is... comic strip. Email: [email protected] ICQ: 40937169 AIM: Crosma1 MSN: [email protected]

Re: What does Apogee use? For 2D games
I have The Games Factory, and I was wondering if it would be ok for me to make a commander keen fan game/clone.
I myself was also wondering what was used to make it. I concluded it was QBasic. I know im wrong on that. Heh, but anyways that'd be really cool if some people got together/independently make more commander keen or cosmo type games. Those games are gonna stick with me the rest of my life unlike shadow warrior. Which after playing for 20 minutes I had a severe case of nausea. |
