That's because your video card doesn't properly support all EGA video modes. Crystal Caves has the same problem, as do some of the Keen games.

You know, my card doesn't support EGA, either, and I'm getting rather upset about it. I turn on "SVGA" compatibility in Keens 4-6, and then I can see it at least--but the screen bounces all over the place like a jackrabbit on morphine.

My favorite classic game would have to be Bio-Menace. It's just so much fun. I still play the game all over again every once in a while.

What version of Keen do you have? The version number is on the first screen you see when you start the game. v1.4 was the final version. That version had an additional attempt to fix the SVGA problem. There's two switches there, "SVGA comp" and "Fix Jerky Motion".

If you have v1.4, and have tried both of these, you won't be able to fix it software wise, you'd have to talk to your hardware people about it. Most of them probably won't want to mess with EGA support, they'll tell you forget it, or "it's the software's problem" (which it isn't).

Go to our downloads page and download the Keen 4 that is there. If that fixes your problem, you'll need an upgraded version, which you'd have to talk to Tech support about (email is [email protected]).

If that dosen't fix your problem, then there will be nothing you can do, unfortunately.

Re: My favorite classic Apogee game!
My favorites (though I'm sure no-one cares) go in this order;

1. The Keens, particularly K4
2. Wacky Wheels
3. Paganitzu
4. ROTT
5. Crystal Caves

I didn't like Secret Agent because the gameplay didn't seem as smooth as Crystal Caves and it just wasn't as fun as it coulda been. Just my humble opinion. ;-)

BIO MENACE, SECRET AGENT and...
RISE OF THE TRIAD!!

Unlike many others, I don't like Keen all that much.

3DRealms, would you do another 2-D game? Please?

OK, if I have to do it myself, where should I turn to learn how to do that?

Re: My favorite classic Apogee game!
i figured up the price for all the old Apogee 2d games i want and here they are:

Alien Carnage
Duke II
Bio Menace
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
Crystal Caves
Duke Nukem I
Monster Bash
Commander Keen: Vorticons & Goodbye Galaxy!

All of them togethter would cost $264.60
No offense but doesnt that seem like a little much for 8 2-4 year old games?

it doesn't sound sick, i love it!!!
i even used that as my former signature.
however it's wasn't original, the green dude in Blake Stone: AOG, used to play dead. the guy in ROTT just did it more comically.

Re: My favorite classic Apogee game!
it might sound sick, but the thing that i liked almost the most about ROTT was how on those certain types of enemys u could shoot them and the would beg for mercy and then u could kill them. I thought that was the best AI ever, probably was for its time.

i played the shareware too, it was on my ROTT CD.
but i don't like it at all, the characters look bad, and the gameplay is not exciting, and the whole design is bleak.

Mostly Frank Maddin. The art was done by Frank, Frank's wife Lucinda, and some by George. That's the bulk of the game, if I'm not mistaken.

HOCUS POCUS BABY!!!!

Man this is taking me back... when Apogee and Epic used to kick out a new game every six months....

Anyway... my favorite Apogee classics (that I can remember) are...

Hocus Pocus
Duke 2
Raptor(loved that ol'skool scrolling shoot 'em up action!)
Alien Carnage (ditto!)
Mystic Towers (whoo! the most original action-adventure game I've ever played...)
Terminal Velocity (shweet! better than Descent! Dammit, TRI, where's my TV2?)
Wolfenstein 3D (man, that game r0cked my nutz when I first saw it...)
Wacky Wheels (i thought it was a blatant Super Mario Kart rip-off, though.)

You guys should lump all these games on one big honkin' CD and sell it for $100, or something... These games just Rocked!
