Question about this video!
I found this clip, in some site. I'm wondering if the guy in the video(showing the game) is still in the gaming business!

If you mean Paul Schuytema (I didn't see the movie you pointed at) then the anwer is yes. I believe he started his own game-company a few years ago. I'm not sure, but if you do a google search on Paul Schuytema you should find everything you would like to know.

Haha, coudnt help but luagh when he was so happy to say "80-90% done with the tech". Thats about how far they got.

But holy sh!t that was some advanced game.. errh.. tech. And those gameplay ideas are simply brilliant. I cant help but think that the game could have been a hit even though it slipped to 2004. Hopefully, the ideas are still around!

Never really got into the Pray hype. Was to busy waiting for DNF. Ironicly enough, I think I still am.

Nah, I think they'll like it. They can have a camping spot in the middle of an open area but duck for cover whenever they want to.

And think about how portals would function in a open single player game like the GTA games.

You guys have to realize that none of the technology from the original will show up directly in the new game. Things have changed dramatically in the past 7-8 years.

Here's a slightly higher quality version of that video showing off the same thing...

http://www.imhz.com/videos/Prey_E3_1998_IMHz.avi

Here's also an old E3 trailer showing off the same version of the game. This ones kinda interesting because it has voice acting and some story elements added to it...

Re: Question about this video!
Everytime I think of that video I get more depressed about Prey... I knew nothing of the game until Kev showed me that damn movie.... they were so close.. I mean so close to releasing a killer game... WHY 3DR!?!
That game would've kicked so much ass, It would've wiped the floor with Q3, Unreal and UT would have bowed down to Prey... It would've been the single player and multiplayer of the year and the few after it...
That engine just looked so awesome, It would've made Half-Life, and the multiple revisions and updates it took that game to get upto a worthy speed, look like a mod.

I was telling my brother about how pretty Prey looked, it looked like a 2001 game someone made possible in 98 and he didn't believe me, that maybe I was exagurating, and then I showed him that IMHz video and his jaw was dropped all through-out the video. Afterward, he too was wondering why...

These questions matter naught now, but it's just the kinda thing to get a gamer all worked up, %80 of the tech done... %20 percent left to work on, and then they would've moved on to the levels and other misc details...

I told him, if I put it on hold, I would have left 2 programmers sit on the engine, every technical enhancement, every new engine effect that became popular, they would have been there to pop that information right into it, to make sure the engine aged beautifully.

* sits and crys over how pretty it looked *

I remember seeing some original screenshots on the main page of the 3DR site way back when, and was blown away. Watching that Prey video (which I have several times) blows my mind considering the equipment they had.

Great to look forward to Prey and DNF!

It is indeed amazing. I think it's sad that developers are only starting to add things like that into games. Very sad. Are developers lazy? Lack the skill? Lack the budget? I don't know. Prey looked (and still does) amazing.

Last I heard of Paul was a couple of years ago, he was writing reviews for cnet's old gaming site, but I can't remember the name now. Before that I heard he was working for a company that made kids games.

Haven't heard about him in ages, though.

"Gameplay ramifications?"

Come on.... that's corny.

It's obvious all nerdy game developers are..... eccentric. John Carmack, Tim Sweeny, George (although I have yet to see him talk, I'm sure he's nerdy). But lets just say, some have better speaking skills than others.

Now that I've finally seen those videos, I have one word.

Damn!

Now I'm REALLY hoping that the advancements shown in that interview will be included with the game - the closest we've seen to those portals are lame little render-to-texture teleporters, for instance.

If not, that would be the best extra ever put into a "goodies" folder *hint**hint**hint*

Portals are in. But I don't know about the destructible environments though.

I kinda figured portals are in, but I was wondering about portal rendering - the technobabble term they used to explain why they could push rooms with an almost Unreal2 LOD through a voodoo 2 on a P266.

The latest portal-based engine I can recall is Build, but that was far more limited in what it was capable of doing - remember "Spin Cycle"?

Take 2 isn't in charge of anything. They're just publishing. Creative control belongs to 3DRealms and Human Head. Just like Max Payne 1.

It is Paul Schuytema being interviewed by Jess Holderbaum. I am the executive producer of the show "Infinite MHZ" in 1998/99 when we got those two exclusive interviews from 3DRealms. We were the only camera crew allowed into that back room at the E3 booth. http://www.imhz.com/videos has both of the interviews.

Thanks to George and Paul for letting us in. I remember getting alot of flack from other press members, some of the PR from 3DRealms, and Monolith who had a friendly / not so friendly war going on between the development teams at the time.

Last I heard, Paul (who also did alot of work on Mech Warrior 3) is doing well with his new company http://www.lanterngames.com/. He's finished up about 10 projects since his work on Prey. I have had some e-mail contact with him over the years. I know he's in a NDA either verbal or written about the Prey work. However, I can tell you from what I saw, the portal technology was awesome. I think the problem was when multiple portals were being created / moved.

I have alot more raw footage of game play, we let the camera roll during setup and breakdown. Its about 10 minutes or so of gameplay, but I can not release this footage. I have no releases signed for this footage. I only have releases signed for the 2 interviews. However, it will might just show up some day.

And yes that was a HP Vectra 233 with Voodoo 2. I personally checked the specs. I think it only had 32 megs of ram.

Wow thats wonderful to hear. I wonder how heavy the released game would be.
May I ask Joe about if people who can somewhat properly run D3, their machine's are OK for Prey?

Also now I remember why Joe bashed me once when I said "D3 is very laggy and is out of optimization".

I think George would start docking my pay if I started confirming things on my own authority.

I'll leave that up to him.

i hope so. and i doubt it. times are over, why should they give the permission to release this outdated game footage after such a long time. besides pleasing us few guys, there's no reason to do so.

same goes for some old dnf build. as sweet as it would be...
