Question 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
.. is really high? Cause all textures in the demo were DDS format, not TGA, and the texture quality was terrible in majority of areas all over the game. I do hope this isn't the case with the full PC version (prob done to reduce the demo size).

I understand reducing resolution and other optimizations you guys did for Xbox, but for PC, I do hope the high quality will look like Ultra (since medium-D3's High) and not low quality.

What? I think the textures look fine, and much better/higher detail than Doom 3or Quake 4.

Ultra quality in Doom 3 simply removed all compression.

In Prey, the high quality setting simply increases the size of the normal maps.

Plus the Sharpen Bump maps option in the video menu makes then seem more crisp and detailed.

The only real low res stuff i wasn't pleased with, was some of the monitors, like the ones showing Enisi (Tommy's grandfather) and Jen...
And some Generator machinery, i found inside the Bar...

But that's about it...

It's the highest I can go, game won't go above 16x :P

Seriously, game detected highest quality, I increased the res, enabled 4xAA and game ran without any problems. Now the reason for poor quality can be only that they reduced the textures for demo and killed many high res ones just to keep the size small (cause of xbox?).

I do hope they have tga versions in full game. I hate compressed textures, and D3, uncompressed looks damn hot.

It's not what's on the clothes, but what's inside them that counts...

IMO, the DDS format is like going back to 8-bit textures. Horrible blocky artifacts can be seen on most of then with its own texture compression.

I hate compressed (and low res) textures, almost all textures are under 512x512 (mostly 256x256). Kinda obvious why they looked faded at even medium distance.

This is like worse than HL2. Now I am seriously worried, is THIS the final quality or was this just for the demo? I was expecting Prey to use higher res textures from start, but looks like even a standard door (in bar) is using 128x256 diffuse and specular map. Yikes.

Its all about the texture size. With good compression, you will be hard pressed to find a difference between compressed and uncompressed.

Doom3 was a joke. It offered uncompressed maps and textures, but it looked virtually identical to High Quality, but use nearly twice the texture data. They could have gone so much farther with higher texture size and some compression.

I'm sure if they'd downgraded the texture detail they would have announced it.

If you're that bothered about the compression you could try:

seta image_useCompression "0"

That still doesn't change the fact that:

a) It's DDS file (there is no TGA file to load up without compression as a replacement)

b) Very low res textures.

But I think it's just for demo.. right?

I never really understand the people complaining about .dds or compressed textures in general. Things would be a lot worse without them. Either you'd have to have a 4GB memory graphics card or you'd have to re-load every 20 seconds of the game. We wouldn't have the current visual quality in gaming if there wasn't all those little tricks. The few downsides are part of the trade-off.

Well until 512 meg or 1 gig cards are common...

And even then I bet people compress textures, because more texture variety is desired more than higher quality textures. Most people will never even notice or care about texture compression. It's not something you pick up on in normal gameplay.

Re: 'High' Quality in full version (PC)..
I also noticed the texture quality was low for a game out in 2006. It was especially noticable in the spirit realm, where the floor looked like it came out of HL 1. This was at full details 1280x1024, 2xAA, 16xAF.

The interior of the alien ship looked much better, but there were times were many places were blurry (not counting the monitors). Hopefully it's a size issue with the demo and not indictative of the final product.

Doubtful, people say that same thing about the demo of every game. It is what is, it's not going to look magically better in 3 weeks, personally I think it looks pretty damm good overall, when you step back and see the game without a gamers jaded eye's the whole production is pretty impressive.

Yeah, to me if your looking at every texture and looking for something lowres or blurry... then your to focused on finding something wrong and your not enjoying the game.

To many "gamers" today spend to much time looking for something to complain about. We all need to spend more time just being gamers. Playing the games and enjoying them.

Well most tweaks from D3 will work with PREY as well. So it was only a matter of time before those guys made one for PREY.

I call them the "halo generation" ... they've played no games from the 70s/80s or early 90s. They don't know how far things have come and can't appreciate it.

It's a damn shame because I've been gaming ever since Super Mario on the NES. But that doesn't stop me from seeing the low-res textures sprinkled in Prey.

The only low-res textures I've seen are on Jen's clothes. Other than that the rest of the game looks absolutely amazing.

I say we should just sit back and enjoy the game, a low res texture here or there won't kill the game for anyone.

You can save some time, it's pointless. I enjoyed the PC demo and it's immersive and good-looking enough so it didn't cross my mind to stare at a texture. I know that everything is about details, but when the thing is globally stunning it's just a total waste of focus.

Men what is this complain about? I was utterly supriced with the overall very sharp texture quality. They obviously improved that matter over doom3 or quake4. Some lazyness on character models....but lets call it for practical matters

I even though medium quality looks pretty high

some AWESOME texture (design) work in there.

Please do. I played the demo 2 times and didn't notice anything. I suppose it's because I value gameplay over graphics

Yeah, i didn't notice anything wrong with the textures in the demo at all also, I actually thought they were very high quality and good.. This guy complaining about the textures is annoying me much more then the textures in the game themselves.
