"Grabbag" fan remix contest

29th January 1996, Duke Nukem 3D was release...
... 12 years later we all growed up, but in our common life, in the office, or when we're in the mall, there's always a piece of Duke Nukem in our minds.

Why ?... Simply because we always think "how may Duke Nukem act" in any circonstances, life could be so easy...
Now it's time to be a part of the community that speaks about the coming release of "Duke4ever" for the year 200X (x=mystery )

You're a "Duke Nukem" fan
You think you rock !
Your ego is bigger than planet earth
You're a professionnal or non professionnal musician
You wanna offer your contribution to the community

Take your electric guitar, your mediator and post right here your recent or old creation in MP3 format.
Then any people living on planet earth would be able to bring it and try it on his mobile phone, MP3 player, in the car, the train, on the "alien toilets to put bricks".

CONTEST DETAILS :

This contest is strictly non commercial and made by fans, for fans.

Contest is open to any human form living on planet earth over its country legal age.
You're a musician (professionnal or non professionnal) and made recently or a long time ago a remix of the "Grabbag" theme in a rock, metal or punk style using an electric guitar.
By submitting YOUR original creation (or YOUR band creation), you lost rights on it and consider your masterpiece as a public domain one offered to the board community.

Submission open from 29th January 2008 till the 1st April 2008 (5 years birthday of Duke Nukem 3D code).
Simply post your composition and face the arena of fans, this window period offer enough time to create your own music if you didn't realised it in the past.

As we speak about Duke4ever, the 4 best ones will win a prize, the prizes would be announced "when they'd be found"
(They of course couldn't be exchange with a money payment).

(Note : Recently planned a contest from November 2007 till December 2007 on a Manga, with rare Japanese animation celluloid to win so don't panic about this, will quickly found some prizes matching with Duke's style).

ADDITIONNAL DETAILS :

Note to Joe Siegler :
If at any times 3DR says "you don't have to make this fan contest", I'll stop immediatly.

I personally see no point. A lot of the musical talent in this community has already done tons of remixes. VertexGuy, bobthefish, nerological has one coming down the pipes, Matthias Sachal, theres a trance remix, a blues remix, theres Musicallyinspireds megamix/64tracked/highquality grabbag, theres all the variations from the official games.

Seems like theres not many people here who are going to do yet another rendition for a contest like this. Just my opinion on the matter.

Dear Commando Nukem,

Post the rock-metal-punk ones, in my opinion, as wrote up, this is Duke styled.

I just let this window for those that maybe wanna re-work on some old files.
But I agree that most of the sources are already available, so we simply need to list them (with the agreement of the creator) and start to select the best ones...
_____________

Dear JobivanHiob,

I'm neither not a musician, just a graphic artist during my hobbies...
But this is not the first time I arrange such "fan" contest, so I could easily use my experience on it.

This is not my current project for 2008, but I could use the same structure as the last one that make win prizes in France, Belgium, Brazil and USA...

Just remember that prices wouldn't be huge, but I'll try to find rare artefacts able to be appreciated, and that due to the fact we pass the 29th January I wanna announce it right now whatever I didn't yet collect prizes.

Also this may maybe make react 3DR, who knows...

Back from a casino products shop, saw some nice things that may cross with "Las Vegas" place of Duke4Ever and be pleasant prizes.

Also founded a really good idea for a big and funny prize but need to see overseas shipping costs...

Are some people interested in the topic ?...

Just tell me if I use my money on it or not to continue this idea ?
(otherwise I buy myself a Wii videogame with this money )

GOT IT !!
The most close trophy of Duke's style, a "piece" of him... not usefull if you're living outside Europe but really funny

Your own BALLS OF STEEL french "petanque" set.

This could be customised with engravers, so I'll ring tomorrow the sport shop...
Could engraver a maximum of 10 letters on it, is this a sign ??? Because 10 letters are exactly "DUKE-NUKEM"

There's another option that is only available for companies, with laser engraving that allows you to put a round logo (such as a radioactive symbol ). Unfortunaly I couldn't suscribe to this option, but I'll ask the cost (maybe 3DR interested ).

Pre-idea of contest prizes :
- 1st Prize, "OBUT" own customized "BALLS OF STEEL"
- 2nd Prize, "KEM" plastified poker deck to always "BET ON DUKE"
- 3rd Prize, "MALABAR" (french popular ones) bubblegums pack (but does FDA agree ?) to "CHEW BUBBLEGUMS"
- 4th Prize (Jury special), The Mystery Prize that'd "SHAKE IT BABY"

If agreed, I'll make a picture in the same style as the first one...

Waiting for your comments.

Honestly, this contest seems like a bad joke. Nobody wants "DUKE-NUKEM" etched in some steel balls, or some chewing gum. I can't honestly think of anything that would motivate me to make a song about Duke (except a tour of 3DR's studios) anyways.

Where do I collect the prize?

Kidding but Yatta has my DNF music submission at his duke4.net website if anyone wants to hear it.

If this was a real contest with real prizes i'd consider doing something but until then i don't have much time and motivation.

IF 3DREALMS DECIDES TO DO AN OFFICIAL CONTEST... IT WILL BE A DIFFERENT MATTER

Hey buddies, just note that this thread hadn't been banned yet...

So that means :
- They didn't follow it because they didn't wanna waste time while producing the game.
- They let it live and didn't block this idea.

I'm totally serious with those prizes, as wrote in the beginning of the thread, it's just for fun.

Concerning prize quality, in my opinion why always ask for more than some little prizes, I'm an individual which is fan of "Duke-Nukem" and tried to find some prizes.
So don't ask me to substitute a company as big as 3DR with trip to Vegas to win or other big things.

If a valid quantity of people suscribe the thread and post their creation, the contest would be valid.

I'll make a better picture of the prizes and you'll comment.

Any people is free to post his audio creation... so LiquiD, you can start the contest and this may attract people.

Owh I forgot, Duke could be odious, but we're in real life so if you've comments on a music creation that may hurt its creator, keep it in your mind but don't post it.
You've to understand that this contest may group individuals or professionnals with differents skills.

Dear Nukkus, I'm not a musician so I didn't know how it sounds like.
I could suppose that with added kicking ass drums, it'll fit the Duke's style...

In my opinion, instrument list could be updated if the render is close to an electric guitar... the most important is to offer a punk-rock-heavy-metal remix...

Any objections from someone ??

Well, this mix ain't pretty, it's basically the stock midi put through sonar, and i used dreamstation, ttz, pentagon and revalver. it's nothing special, and i didn't bother looping it. if anyone likes it, i'll rearrange the entire song with the same samples, this is basically a teaser to see if there's any interest. props to lee jackson for the original midi!

You know what, make me think it could be a great "underwater" remix...

I agree this instrument, but cannot edit original post of the contest (time expired)...
(Post it once you estimate it valid, also prefer permanent links instead of such ones as I don't know if hosting runs 3 months)
_________

I get answer from sport shop, so engraver cost 200 USD (arrghhhhhhhhh "duke falling scream"). Balls of Steel are OK but, I couldn't handle engraver, too expensive.

Also package cost for such weight (4 lbs) in international is a bit expensive but OK.

I didn't found any musician e-mail in MP3 but maybe link admin have them...

Only listed my favorites in the fan ones...
1. Brandon Blume 'Musically inspired'
2. Bonch
3. Carbohydrom
4. Chris Kline 'Vertexguy' (unfortunaly poor recording sound quality, may be 3rd)

Note that Liquid - DNF fit perfectly a BGM for an ending with scrolling credits...

In my opinion Psyched - DUCK NUKEM (certainly "HOWARD THE DUCK") mix could win a jury special
He must have balls of steel to have release such MP3...

Megadeth could be a good impartial jury...
... but I unfortunaly didn't have their e-mail adress

If you've friend or musician that wanna join the contest, try to inform them about.

Received an answer from 3DR but seems that my english was a bit incorrect and they didn't understood why I asked their agreement.
I simply wanna have some note saying something like "yes you can make this fan contest but you don't have to say that it's part of 3DR marketing organisation, and need to stay non commercial"

I tried to explain again, but didn't have yet a reply.
In order to plan the international communication I hope receive their answer soon.

Additionnaly, could the people interested to play the contest post a small note about, I already noted that Nukkus, JimBravura and maybe LiquiD.

Mmmmh... I don't think that such private contest will receive their agreement.

In such condition, I could suppose that most of board members will not be part of the contest ?

Well well, as engaged, I'll send during the weekend the prizes picture... and then await a validation from 3DR.

If there is no validation, note, or "green light" till mid-February, I'll not use my money in the contest. If there is, I'll purchase the prizes.

Additionnaly, if there's no agreement and as I would not plan the contest, Nukkus can send me a PM and I'll send him Malabar bubblegums.

So now, preparing the picture and waiting for a 3DR note.

As he founded the contest prizes funny, he accepted to be part of the contest with his old creation "Nuklear Duke".

Contest'll run till April, so we need to wait this deadline to see the real winners.
It's a good one, I agree. But remember that this contest if just for fun, so any piece that rocks is welcome.

I also I didn't yet inform press and websites about, currently listing the different websites (links welcome).
Will finish the rest of prize pictures soon and then start advertising.
Then if they are enough suscribers, contest will be better.

I really hope that few musicians or artists will play it (around 10-20 would be great)... whatever this fan contest is not logoted "3DR".

As for the thread, i'm not really expecting it to be anything big, or anything at all...

I'm sorry to post in here only to mention these two negatives, but someone needs to say it...
All notes welcome, comments on music better but I could understand some reserves as this is a fan project and not a 3DR one.

1. Signature :
3DR forum signature only accepts 5 lines...
Sorry but I couldn't satisfy you on this point due to system rejection.

Mayde 2 years I format my signature this way, so I wouldn't have to change now, thanks for your understanding.

2. Repeating :
Really ??
Just try to give some energy in the thread to keep it on the upper part of the main board...
If more people as Nukkus wrote often I wouldn't have to write and write more about.

Also note that externally I convicted "Carbohydrom" to be part of the contest and you could judge that it's a nice piece.

Based on Vertexguy creation, currently trying to connect VertexGuy to add his creation as a part of the contest... keep you in touch with this case.

By "repeating yourself" i mean the signature... That kind of information really do belong to signatures, because that prevents you from having to post it over and over again...
I would suggest you shortened it a bit, so that it would first to what the forum supports...

I'm in no way objecting this contest you wish to start, i am simply saying that the lack of actively music-creating people might not get near the number you expect/hope to acheive...

Understand that i have no problem with your attitude or anything, i'm just saying things and giving opinions as people tend to do on a forum...

Understood note on signature...
But I don't think you've to focus on this, target is the contest.
Note that as wrote up I used the signature during 2 years and I won't change it now...

Awaiting now is possible reply asap (crossing fingers !! )...

Note that from January 29th till April 1st, we've 64 days.
We only used 23% of the window.

In my opinion the target of 10 musicians/contesters is a nice quantity.
Nukkus, Carbohydrom,... already two submissions, rest 8 to find...

Mathematicaly, if the progression is linear, we'll have 8 musicians, quite close to this estimation.
